What Makes a Good Employee. You decide What Makes a Good Employee? You decide! Successful characteristics in the workplace By: www.uen.org

What Makes a Good Employee? You can find the answer to this question by reading the following true stories about employees who developed certain characteristics or attributes that make them valuable to the company. As you read each case, decide what characteristics the employee has and write it on the activity 2 worksheet.

What Makes a Good Employee? Be on time – Punctuality Be pleasant and helpful - Courteous Work all day even when unsupervised - Trustworthy Be thorough and efficient – Productive Follow company standards –Reliable Go the extra mile – Hardworking Be self-motivated - Dependable Be considerate – Polite Do the job you are asked to do even when it’s difficult

Employee #1 Nate Nate landed a job working for a phone company. Each day as he came to work, he checked in by sliding his time card into a machine that recorded the time he arrived. After his first two months on the job, he received a $200 bonus check. Why he thought? The check stub thanked him for never being late for work during the two months. What characteristic made Nate a good employee?

Employee #2 Mark (Part 1 of 2) Mark had just graduated from school. His uncle, a construction manager, helped him get his first part-time job at a lumber company. When he wasn’t working, he went to college. His supervisor told him if things went well they would eventually make him a delivery driver. After the first day, Mark was ready to quit! He shoveled dirt in the hot sun around the building. He did the same thing the next day. Each day brought a new challenge--Wash all the company trucks, clean the restrooms, shovel more dirt. After three months, Mark’s supervisor told him to go get his driver’s license to deliver the lumber. He was happy! (Go to next slide)

Employee #2 Mark (Part 2 of 2) Next they had Mark work in the mill where they cut the lumber. He eventually got to work in the store and help customers. Because he was working towards a math degree in college, he began figuring the cost for construction jobs. After four years he became a store manager. The company decided to build and open an additional store in a neighboring state. They chose Mark to oversee its construction and be the manager! What attributes or characteristics made Mark a good employee?

Employee #3 Fast Food Owner The owner of a fast-food place would stop by once in a while and see how his store managers and teenage employees were doing. He would pick different times of the day to do so. His employees had specifically been assigned certain tasks such as: sweep the floor, wipe down the tables, wait on customers, cook the food, etc. One day he decided to put some ketchup on a window to see if any employee would notice it and wipe it off. He decided to leave the store and come back another day to see if the window had ever been cleaned. He waited several days. To his surprise when he returned the ketchup was still on the window. What characteristic was the owner looking for in his employees that he did not find?

Employee #4 Trent Trent works alone in a warehouse bending metal for a company. There are days when he never even sees his boss. However, he arrives at work at 8 a.m., works until noon and leaves for lunch for one hour. He returns to work at 1 p.m. and works until closing at 5 p.m. He records the work he does and at the end of the month gives it to his boss. How is Trent a good employee?

Employee #5 Celeste Many companies have dress code. This is very true in companies that have employees who work with the public. Celeste had been told about the dress code when she was hired. When she first started to work, she made sure she followed the guidelines for dress at work. However, after a few months she started wearing jeans once in awhile. When no one said anything to her, she started wearing a T-shirts with her jeans. Finally her boss had to call her in to talk about her clothes. What did Celeste need to remember?

Spotlight on Ethics ETHICS is a system of acting right or wrong according to standards set for a certain area or culture. It’s sort of like an honor code.

Spotlight on Human Relations HUMAN RELATIONS is being able to work well with other employees. You must be a good communicator, a good listener and have consideration for how the other person feels.

Employee #6 Kevin Kevin files bills for his company and has access to many office supplies. If he needs things for his home office, he takes them from his work. He thinks to about how cheap a box of staples, paper clips, pens, pencils, folders and binders are and that those few items would never be missed at work so its okay to take them. Is it ethical for Kevin to use the company supplies for his own use at home? Why?

Employee #7 Brenda Brenda is employed by a company that allows one hour lunches and two 10 minute breaks--one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Brenda is a good worker and does her job well. Therefore, she thinks it is okay for her to come back a few minutes late from break and lunch each day. Is this ethical? Why?

Employee #8 Tom Tom works in an office with five other employees. He is becoming more and more frustrated with Erin, the employee whose desk is next to his. Whenever one of the other four employees leaves the office for a few minutes Erin will start to say something bad about the person who has left the room. Help Tom solve his problem. How should he handle this?

Employee #9 Jennifer Jennifer is absent from work often. Whenever she is gone, the boss always gives Jennifer’s work to Ashley to finish. Ashley finds herself working late to get Jennifer’s work done. Also, Ashley feels very tired by the time the day is over because she has to rush all day to do her co workers work. What should Ashley do?

Employee #10 Jared Jared has tickets to a concert on Friday night in a nearby city. He has asked his boss if he can leave work early so he can get there on time. His boss said “yes” if he can get someone to stay late and work for him. His other coworkers do not like the band that Jared wants to go see. Jared doesn’t think any one would stay late for him because of their bad attitude about the music he likes. What can Jared do?

What Makes a Good Employee? Now, practice what you have learned about being a good employee by being a good student. Don’t forget to use the keys you have learned today along with good human relations and you will find that YOU know how to be a GOOD EMPLOYEE.
