MILITARISM Army and military forces are given high profile by the government. European countries have an arms race French and German forces double between 1870 & 1914 Germany & Britain competed to be the best navy Von Schlieffen Plan If Russia attacked Germany, then Germany would attack France, by way of Belguim

ALLIANCE An alliance is an agreement made between two or more countries to give each other help. Alliances signed between 1879-1914 Triple Entente Great Britain, France, & Russia Triple Alliance Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary

IMPERIALISM When a country takes over new lands or countries and makes them subject to their rule All of the European countries were competing for new lands Britain and France increased their rivalry with Germany over territory in Africa

NATIONALISM Strong support of the rights and interests of one’s country. Countries Unite Germany & Italy After Napoleonic Wars Created great sense of pride and wanted to grow the country France lost lands (Alsace-Lorraine) after the Franco-Prussian War. France didn’t like Germany for that reason.

CRISES Morocco Bosnia 1904 – Land given to France by Britain Moroccans wanted independence Germany protested France owning the land France avoided war and Britain agreed to grant Germany land in the Congo (Africa) to back down Bosnia 1908 – Austria-Hungary took over Bosnia Serbia felt the land should be theirs Threatened Austria-Hungary with war Russia sided with Serbia Germany sided with Austria- Hungary War broke out between the locals
