Introduction We tested which method of bleaching is the best overall. We tested using Clorox brand bleach in gel, liquid, spray, and bathroom cleaner form on several white t-shirts. We used Clorox brand products to be sure that the bleach in each product was consistent. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. We will compare specific aspects of all forms of bleaching and rate them on a scale of 1-5. The bleach that scores the highest in the most categories will prove to be most practical solution to stain removal.

Stains Options and Criteria 4 food products were used to create the stains

Stains Blueberry Honey Soy Sauce Taco Sauce Chocolate Syrup

Bleaches 4 different forms of bleaches were used in attempt to remove the stains

Test 1: Stain Removal BEFORE

Test 1: Stain Removal AFTER CONTROL GROUP NO BLEACH

Test 1: Stain Removal Liquid Gel Spray Toilet Cleaner

Test 2: Ease of Use We used a rubric to determine the ease of use. The number of steps required to bleach the garment corresponds to its ranking.  ★ 5 4 3 2 1 Clorox Liquid Bleach Measure Half a cap Add to water   Clorox Gel Bleach Add to water Clorox Spray Bleach Spray on shirt Wait 5 minutes Clorox Toilet Bowl Cleaner None of the bleaches took more than 3 steps to complete

Test 3: Price Prices are ranked from most to least expensive. Unit price determined the bleach’s price score. Price Ounces Unit Price* Clorox Liquid Bleach $1.99 30oz $0.07 Clorox Spray Bleach $2.49 24oz $0.10 Clorox Bleach Gel $3.12 $0.13 Clorox Toilet Bowl Cleaner $1.97 $0.08 * Unit price is price per fluid ounce

Test 4: Damage to Clothing None of the clothes were damaged by the bleaches when used as instructed on white colored clothing. Using bleach on colored clothing may damage them.

Conclusion We used a rating system from 1 to 5 (5 being the best) to judge each cleaning solution using 4 different criteria. In the Stain Removal category, Bleach Spray worked the best and the Toilet Bowl Cleaner seemed to work the worst. In the Damage to Clothing category, all four products caused no damage to the shirts. In the Price category, Concentrated Liquid Bleach ended up being the cheapest and the Bleach Gel was the most expensive. In the Ease of Use category, the Bleach Gel and Toilet Bowl Cleaner both tied for first while the Bleach Spray was rated last. *Actual stain removal may differ than what is visible in the pictures due to the lighting conditions of each photo

Recommendation We determined Concentrated Liquid Bleach was the best cleaning solution to use. It did no damage to the shirt and was the least expensive of the cleaning solutions. The Concentrated Bleach also ranked 2nd in stain removal and ease of use.
