Teacher assessment Accurate and regular teacher assessment is vital component of the year. Throughout the year we will be planning for, teaching and assessing from the new National Curriculum for year 6 in order to support and prepare the children for the end of year assessments
Practice SATs At intervals over the year we will be having practice SATs weeks for the children. (November and February) Allows practice for the children under test conditions, allows misconceptions and gaps in knowledge and understanding to be addressed regularly and effectively through careful analysis and future planning and assessment.

The English Tests Reading English grammar, punctuation and spelling test Writing: Teacher assessed throughout the year. Separate scores for Reading, Grammar Punctuation and Spelling (GPS) and writing will be awarded to the children
Reading Some questions will ask the children to find answers directly from the reading booklets they are given.
Others will require the children to deduce answers by using words or phrases as evidence.
Some questions will ask the children to evaluate what they have read, again using the text to back up their answers.
Writing In Year 6 we teach a variety of different forms of writing. Your child’s work will be assessed throughout the year by the class teacher. Evidence will be taken from English as well as other subjects such as Science and History. Here are some of the tasks your child is required to complete: Persuasive text Formal letters Recount Report Explanation Poetry Narrative texts (a story, or based on any of the above formats)
How you can support your child at home: • Sensible bedtime • Healthy diet – eat breakfast • Drink plenty of water at home and school. • Encourage your child positively, without putting too much pressure on him/her. • Support with homework – provide a quiet place for work, share the targets, refer to the study guides you bought/loaned • Use revision guides and websites to support your child’s learning. • Read with your child, discussing the content and choice of words the author has made. Ask your child questions about their reading, encouraging them to identify words or phrases to back up their answers.
