DJ Brown Eric Mayes Division I Personnel: Individual Associated With Prospective Student-Athlete

OVERVIEW History of Individual Associated With Prospective Student-Athlete/ Individual Associated With Recruited Prospective Student-Athlete Legislation. Current Legislation. Basketball/Football. IAWP Analysis. Membership Best Practices. Case Studies. Resources.

*!!@&!

History of IAWP/IAWRP 2010 – Adoption of 2009-99 in MBB - Speak on rationale. 2011 – IAWP expanded to strength coaches. 2010-12 – Interpretive and process authority for IAWP resided in ENF - 2012 transitioned to AMA. “During the past five years, the interpretive approach has shifted from strict liability to a more fact-based, rule of reason application, without compromising the original intent of the rule. Staff has been less likely to make a determination whether an individual meets the IAWP legislation, and, in many instances, has focused instead on providing guidance to the membership, recognizing that schools are in the best position to gather the necessary facts.” 2017 – Adoption of IAWP/IAWRP Legislation in MFB and WBB.

Current Legislation

IAWP/IAWRP Analysis

IAWP/IAWRP Analysis #EveryoneIsAnIAWP

IAWP/IAWRP Analysis #EveryoneIsAnIAWP Any Could Be

IAWP/IAWRP Analysis Disclaimers: Subjectivity is inherent. NCAA staff does not have all the answers. Every case is not the same. Institutions must be comfortable making the call.

March 2018 Educational Document on IAWP Analysis IAWP/IAWRP Analysis March 2018 Educational Document on IAWP Analysis IAWP Determination Nature of Contact Duration of Contact Frequency of Contact Key Takeaways: IAWP is an individual-specific analysis. Single factors alone do not trigger IAWP status, but the sum of multiple factors.

IAWP/IAWRP Analysis NCAA Educational Document: Duration contact. Frequency contact. Nature of contact. Interpretative analysis refers only to “does this person trigger per the definition”. The strength (or lack there of) of an individual's influence is considered via the waiver/student-athlete reinstatement process.

IAWP/IAWRP Analysis Discussion Questions. How are you educating staffs, coaches, etc., related to IAWP? Who is involved in your IAWP process on-campus? When (during the employment process) does IAWP analysis begin? What information is needed? Write on Easels
