A MEMS Science Production  Heat is energy that flows from one object to another.  3 types of heat transfer:  Conduction, Convection, Radiation.
Conduction in Non-Metals Every atom is physically bonded to its neighbours in some way. If heat energy is supplied to one part of a solid, the atoms vibrate.

The Applications and Benefits of Reflectives in Metal Buildings

Overview About RIMA How Reflectives Work Product Types Applications

About RIMA The Reflective Insulation Manufacturers Association represents manufacturers and distributors of reflective insulation, radiant barriers and IRCC materials. RIMA activities are guided by an active board of industry members who participate on national and local levels of building code organizations and governmental agencies. Visit us at www.rima.net.

How Reflectives Work Heat moves through a building via radiation, conduction and convection. Reflectives “reflect” the radiant energy striking the surfaces of the building and are low “emitters.”

Why Insulate? Increases efficiency of heating and cooling system Increase comfort/reduce noise Save on energy costs Moisture/condensation control

Heat Behavior “Letting the Heat Out” Heat travels toward cold - displacing the cold Approximately 75% of total heat transfer across air spaces is by radiation

Three Forms of Heat Conduction Convection Radiation

Conduction in Your Building Heat passes through your walls by conduction Heat traveling through any solid or from one solid to another, moves through conduction

Convection Hot air rises Convection is the circulation of hot or warm air As the air heats up, it becomes less dense, and rises. As it rises, the cool air is forced down to be warmed up by the heat source This is a continuous cycle

Radiant Heat Radiant heat consists of infrared waves. The waves travel at the speed of light, in straight lines. The waves will go through, absorb into or be reflected from materials they intersect.

Heat Flow Across Air Spaces in Buildings Radiant Heat represents 93% of heat movement downwards Convection makes up 0% because hot air rises Radiant Convection Conduction

Heat Flow Across Air Spaces in Buildings Radiant Heat represents 50% to 75% of heat movement upwards Convection is significant in this heat flow direction Radiant Convection Conduction

Heat Flow Across Air Spaces in Buildings Radiant Heat represents 65% to 80% of heat movement sideways Radiant Convection Conduction
