Tornadoes

Formation Video on formation of tornado: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmWh9jV_1ac&spfreload=10 Tornadoes begin when the sun heats up the surface of the land. The warm, less heavy air begins to rise and it meets the colder, heavier air above it The faster moving air spins and rolls all over the slower wind Now it is an invisible, horizontal wind that spins and rolls like a cylinder The spinning winds create a vortex. Tornado is fully formed and moving in the direction of the thunderstorm

Where tornadoes can form anywhere in the world, but they form most frequently in regions with flat, dry terrain most dangerous tornadoes from in tornado alley a region in the central U.S. that includes northern Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska

Types landspout born when a small circulation forms near the ground when different surface boundaries come together and are weaker than normal tornados 2. waterspout whirling column of air and water mist 3. multiple vortex contains several vortices rotating around, inside of, and as part of the main vortex.

landspout tornado, Wisconsin 2011 waterspout tornado, Florida 2015 multiple vertex, Missouri 2011

Measuring strength scientists use the F-Scale to measure how strong tornadoes are

Safety Look for the following danger signs: dark/greenish sky large hail large dark low-lying cloud loud roar like a train If you are in a building, move to a basement If there is not a basement, go to an inside room like a closet or hallway Stay away from windows, doors and outside walls use your arms to protect your head and neck If you are outside or in a car and cannot get into shelter, lay in a ditch or low-lying area or crouch near a strong building.
