Notes: Graphs: used in science to show comparisons, patterns, trends, and relationships in data.

Yes, we know, this is not Math Class…. But scientists still need to work with the numbers they collect in their experiments. What is this type of numerical data called?

Graphing Quantitative Data: Numerical data is graphed to help it make sense to scientists. Two sets of numerical data are put on a line graph or a scatter plot

LINE GRAPHS show trends, especially over time, in data. SCATTER PLOTS let us see relationships in data.

Sometimes The data is not numerical, (quantitative) but descriptive in nature What is this type of descriptive data called?

Graphing Qualitative Data: This is most often done with Bar Graphs BAR GRAPHS are used to compare data

Sometimes scientists have one set of numerical (quantitative) data and one set of descriptive (qualitative) data = Bar Graphs To graphically create A picture of the data

All graphs have some things in common: independent variable: plotted on the X-axis. Label Units! dependent variable: plotted on the Y-axis Label units! Units of measurement must be included! Scales & intervals must be appropriate to the data Must have a Title to describe the data

How to make these graphs Go to word doc of notes…. http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/Graphing/Classic/

How Smart Are Animals? http://video.pbs.org/video/1777525840 Think about the experiments these scientists are doing to test animal intelligence. What are their independent and dependent variables in each animal “experiment?” What do they do to make sure they are getting accurate results?

How the Milk Experiment worked: Milk is mostly water but it also contains vitamins, minerals, proteins, &tiny droplets of fat suspended in solution. Fats and proteins are sensitive to changes in the surrounding solution (the milk). The colors swirl due to the chemistry of the drop of soap - its bipolar characteristics (nonpolar on one end and polar on the other), weakens chemical bonds holding the proteins and fats in solution. The soap's polar, or hydrophilic (water-loving), end dissolves in water, & its hydrophobic (water-fearing) end attaches to a fat globule in the milk. The molecules of fat bend, roll, twist, & contort in all directions as soap molecules race around to join up with fat molecules - so the food coloring molecules are bumped and shoved everywhere, providing an easy way to observe all the invisible activity. As the soap is evenly mixed with the milk, the action slows & eventually stops.
