Convection Notes

Hot Stuff Rises Cool Stuff Sinks Convection Currents Hot Stuff Rises Cool Stuff Sinks

Arthur Holmes In 1929 said that convection currents in the mantle could create enough force to move continents.

Watch ‘em go!

Mid-Ocean Ridges Huge, long mountain ranges that run along the middle of the ocean floor. There is a deep rift valley that runs along the middle of the range.

Magnetic Reversals In earth’s history, the magnetic polarity has flipped back & forth. These changes are recorded in igneous rocks.

Magnetic Reversals Fe crystals from the MORs lined up w/ the switching magnetic poles, forming “stripes” which showed new oceanic crust was being formed & pushed away from the rift valley.

Seafloor Spreading The theory that states that as oceanic plates are pulled apart, new ocean floor is formed at rift valleys. Take a ride!

Theory of Plate Tectonics States that the Earth’s crust is broken into pieces called lithospheric plates that float on the asthenosphere and are carried around by convection currents.
