Implementing Formative Assessment Practices with Support from the Smarter Balanced Digital Library 1 minute Running time = 1 minute Slide intent: The purpose of this slide is to introduce the session. Presenter says: Welcome to our breakout session on Implementing Formative Assessment Practices with Support from the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. (Introduce session presenters) The goal of today’s session is to dig deeper and explore how the Smarter Balanced Digital Library can support you and your colleagues’ formative assessment practices. For an introduction to this topic, please refer to section four of the 2015—16 CAASPP Institute archived videos available on the CDE Web site, . Materials required:

California Department of Education Learning Goals Participants understand the definition and attributes of the formative assessment process; what the formative assessment process looks like in action in a classroom; the purpose of and types of resources in the Smarter Balanced Digital Library; and how Smarter Balanced Digital Library Playlists can support implementation of formative assessment practices. 1 minute for slides 2 -4 Running time = 2 minutes Slide intent: The purpose of this slide is to review the learning goals for the session. Presenter says: Modeling good formative assessment practice, we have identified several learning goals and success criteria to clarify the Intended Learning for this session. As you can see on this slide our learning goals focus on refining and improving your understanding of: The definition and attributes of the formative assessment process What the formative assessment process looks like in action in a classroom The purpose of the Smarter Balanced Digital Library and how its resources can better support teachers to implement formative assessment practices in their classrooms. How Smarter Balanced Digital Library Playlists can support implementation of formative assessment practices. Materials required: California Department of Education

California Department of Education Success Criteria Participants can define formative assessment and identify the attributes of the formative assessment process; discuss how Smarter Balanced Digital Library Playlists can support implementation of formative assessment practices; and promote the implementation of the formative assessment process and use the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. 1 minute for slides 2 & 3 Running time = 2 minutes Slide intent: The purpose of this slide is to review the success criteria for the session. Presenter says: You will demonstrate your accomplishment of the learning goals when you are able to: Define formative assessment and identify the attributes of formative assessment as exemplified in practice in a classroom Discuss how the new Smarter Balanced Digital Library resource – Playlists – support teachers to implement formative assessment practices within Common Core-aligned instruction, and Actively promote the classroom implementation of the formative assessment process and use of the Smarter Balanced Digital Library in your district and schools. Materials required: California Department of Education

Understanding the Formative Assessment Process 2 minutes for slides 4 - 7 Running time = 4 minutes Slide intent: The purpose of this slide is to introduce to the first portion of the workshop on implementing formative assessment practices Presenter says: In the first section of the workshop we will discuss the formative assessment process. Materials required: California Department of Education

Formative Assessment Process Defined Formative Assessment is a deliberate process used by teachers and students during instruction that provides actionable feedback used to adjust ongoing teaching and learning strategies to improve students’ attainment of curricular learning targets/goals. http://www.smarterbalanced.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Formative- Assessment-Process.pdf 2 minutes for slides 4 - 7 Running time = 4 minutes Slide intent: The purpose of this slide is to define the formative assessment process. Presenter says: Before we continue looking at the formative assessment process, let’s take a moment to define it. (Read definition from slide to audience.) Materials required: California Department of Education

Clarify Intended Learning Setting the Stage What are the four attributes of the formative assessment process? Clarify Intended Learning Elicit Evidence 2 minutes for slides 4 - 7 Running time = 4 minutes Slide intent: The intent of this slide is to review the four attributes of the formative assessment process. Presenter says: Think to yourself about the four attributes of the formative assessment process. For the next two minutes, talk with your neighbor to see if you can name each attribute and briefly describe what it means in the process. [Call the group back together after 1-2 minutes. Popcorn around the room to get the tables to share out.] In your materials you will find a formative assessment notetaking guide. Take that out now. [Click] Here are the four attributes of the formative assessment process. Please write these in the clover in the center of your notetaking guide. We will be using this note-taking guide for a video activity a few slides later. Materials required: Formative assessment notetaking guide Act On Evidence Interpret Evidence California Department of Education

Formative Assessment Process The complete formative assessment process requires all four attributes. 2 minutes for slides 4 - 7 Running time = 4 minutes Slide intent: The intent of this slide is to briefly describe each attribute of the formative assessment process. Presenter says: While each of these attributes has particular characteristics, all four attributes are required to complete the process. This could occur within a single class period or over a short period of time. This is an on-going, active process that is occurring while you are teaching. The first attribute of the formative assessment process is to clarify intended learning. Learning goals identify the concepts or “big ideas” to be understood. Success criteria are the skills or specific evidence that show progress toward the goals. Learning goals are usually statements that begin with “I understand” and refer to big ideas or concepts. Success criteria are usually statements that begin with “I can” and show evidence of progression toward goals. The second attribute is to elicit evidence. It is important during this step for the teacher not to give the learner too much information. This is a place for the teachers to listen, observe and provide some guidance, possibly by the use of effective questioning. It is important that the learner should be a part of this process, not just the teacher. The elicited evidence provides information about student’s progress toward the learning goals as defined by the success criteria. Evidence elicited from multiple sources may be used to interpret student progress. The next step is to interpret the evidence. This should also include the learner. In this step the teacher analyzes the student’s understanding in relation to the learning goals. It is here that the teacher provides actionable feedback to the student. The final attribute is to act on the evidence. This is an essential part of the process. This attribute requires instruction to change based on the evidence to meet the needs of the learner. In this step the teacher uses actionable feedback to determine next steps to move learning forward. The teacher considers student readiness, interests and learning preferences while acting on the evidence. Materials required: Formative Assessment Notetaking Guide California Department of Education

Formative Assessment in Action 9 minutes Running time = 13 minutes Slide intent: The intent of this slide is to frame the video for the participants and to view the video. The intent of the video is to observe the formative assessment process in action and to look for evidence of each attribute. Presenter says: (Otherwise link is: https://youtu.be/4czVvw8SwHQ) In 2016, the CDE filmed a series of videos, called Formative Assessment in Action, featuring CA SNE members implementing a lesson with students. The purpose of these videos is to demonstrate the seamless flow from one attribute to another in the course of a lesson. The demonstrated lesson is an instructional resource posted in the Digital Library along with the video of implementation. The State Network of Educators (SNE) is a team of educators from Smarter Balanced member states trained to contribute and review instructional and professional learning resources for inclusion in the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. We are going to watch the formative assessment process in action as the video demonstrates how the process flows. In this lesson, students are exploring the relationships between two quantities. The video will be showing parts of the formative assessment clover graphic to alert you to the specific attribute demonstrated in that moment. All formative assessment practices are illustrated throughout the video, but not necessarily in “order.” As you watch the video, use your notetaking guide to record additional evidence of each attribute. This type of guided viewing and analysis process is a good instructional strategy for teachers and professional developers to remember. Identifying just the attribute being demonstrated when one leaf of the clover is displayed on the screen is a Level 1 Depth of Knowledge (DOK) question. Asking participants (or students) to record additional evidence would be either a Level 2 DOK (observe & classify) or Level 3 DOK (cite evidence). [Video clip is 7-8 minutes; extract clip to run from 0:56 to about 9:00] Materials required: Formative assessment notetaking guide California Department of Education

Activity: Four Attributes of Formative Assessment What evidence did you observe for each attribute (both as explicitly cited and through any other examples)? What might each attribute look like in other subject areas and/or grade levels? 6 minutes Running time = 19 minutes Slide intent: The intent of this slide is for participants to share evidence observed for each attribute of formative assessment and to consider how each attribute might look different in different content areas and grade levels. Presenter says: At your tables, discuss the questions on the slide and be ready to share key points with the whole group. [Groups talk for about 3 minutes] [At the end of three minutes bring the group back together and ask 2-3 selected tables to share out for up to 3 minutes] Materials required: Formative Assessment notetaking guide California Department of Education

California Department of Education Activity: Four Attributes of Formative Assessment (cont.) What aspects of the formative assessment process are you currently seeing in practice in your district, school, or classroom? Which attributes need further emphasis or support? reflect 6 minutes Running time = 25 minutes Slide intent: The intent of this slide is for participants to consider the instruction in their district/school/classroom. Also, for participants to consider next steps to improve the implementation of this process. Presenter says: Take 3 minutes for think about the questions on the slide and write down your responses in the notetaking guide. [At the end of 3 minutes, bring the group back together and ask to share with a partner at their table.] Please turn to a partner at your table and share some of your responses (3 minutes). [At the end of 3 minutes, bring the group back together and transition to the next slide.] Materials required: Formative Assessment notetaking guide California Department of Education

The Smarter Balanced Digital Library 1 minute for slides 11 & 12 Running time = 26 minutes Slide intent: The purpose of this slide is to transition to the second portion of the workshop, focusing in the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. Presenter says: In this second section of the workshop we will explore how the Smarter Balanced Digital Library, with some new types of resource tools, can support teachers in implementing formative assessment practices in the classroom. Materials required: California Department of Education

The Smarter Balanced Digital Library Provides an online collection of high-quality instructional and professional learning resources contributed by educators for educators. Resources are aligned with the Common Core State Standards and help educators implement the formative assessment process to improve teaching and learning.  1 minute for slides 11 & 12 Running time = 26 minutes Slide intent: The purpose of this slide is to review what the Smarter Balanced Digital Library is, with a focus on the purpose of supporting formative assessment practices, and improved teaching and learning. Presenter says: The Smarter Balanced Digital Library was launched in 2014 as an online collection of instructional and professional learning resources. There are now more than 2,800 resources in the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. The majority of the resources – with the exception of the 200 specially commissioned modules – have been contributed by educators across the Smarter Balanced member states. Each resource is vetted by three trained State Network of Educator members against a rigorous set of quality criteria, before it is posted in the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. It is important to remember that all of the resources in the Smarter Balanced Digital Library must be aligned with the intent of the Common Core State Standards, and must provide tools or strategies to help teachers implement the formative assessment process in the classroom. Materials required: California Department of Education

Digital Library Web Page 1 minute Running time = 27 minutes Slide intent: The purpose of this slide is to review the Smarter Balanced Digital Library Web page page. Presenter says: Once you log into the Smarter Balanced Digital Library, you come to the Web page which is your entry into this wonderful collection of resources. The Web page includes some initial resource filters that can help narrow a search based on one or more of the Attributes of Formative Assessment, a particular subject area or grade level, or even specific common core standards. You can also click the green “Find Resources” link to see a larger set of filters. The Web page also includes a carousel of featured resources that have been part of Spotlight forums or are highly rated or otherwise of special interest. (Reference the 2015–16 CAASPP Institute video about navigating the Smarter Balanced Digital Library). California Department of Education

Accessing the Digital Library http://www.caaspp.org Requires Smarter Balanced Digital Library log-in credentials 1 minute Running time = 28 minutes Slide intent: The purpose of this slide is to review how to access the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. Presenter says: The California Legislature thought it was extremely important for all educators in the state to have access to the complete suite of assessment tools within the Smarter Balanced Assessment System. Therefore, the state has fully funded all components – the summative assessments, the interim assessments, and the Digital Library, for use by all public school educators. The easiest way to access the Smarter Balanced Digital Library is from the caaspp.org Web site. There is a green button on the Web page that opens the log-in screen for the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. The Smarter Balanced Digital Library log-in credentials have generally been provisioned by the LEA or school site CAASPP coordinator. However, there is now (as of December 2016) a self-registration feature that allows educators in K-12 public schools to request access directly if they have an e-mail address within a pre-approved domain name (i.e., those associated with a California public school system). Unlike the Smarter Balanced Summative and Interim Assessments, which focus primarily on grades 3–8 and high school in English-language arts/literacy and mathematics, there are resources within the Smarter Balanced Digital Library to support instruction across all grade levels, K-12, and across all subject areas. The formative assessment process is an important aspect of high-quality instruction in any classroom, to support monitoring and improving student learning. Materials required: California Department of Education

Digital Library Resources Instructional Resources Professional Learning Resources Spotlight Resources Playlists 1 minute Running time = 29 minutes Slide intent: The purpose of this slide is to highlight the resource types within the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. Presenter says: Remember that “resource” is a broad term used in connection with the Digital Library. A resource could be a document, a lesson plan, a complete unit of instruction, a video, an interactive module, or a combination of items. There are four types of resources in the Smarter Balanced Digital Library, one of which was newly released last fall. The majority of resources within the Digital Library are called Instructional Resources. These are materials that are intended to directly support the teacher with instruction in the classroom that embed formative assessment practices. They might include a guided lesson plan, documents for classroom use, or videos. There are also Professional Learning Resources in the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. These are tools and materials that support teacher learning either individually, within a collaborative group, or through a large group professional development experience. These may include guided PowerPoint presentations, video modules, facilitation guides, and the like. Some resources may combine both Instructional and Professional Learning materials, and are thus posted as combination resources. A resource selection option that was added in 2015 is Spotlight Resources. These are resources that were highlighted in one of the Smarter Balanced Digital Library Spotlight Webinars or Forums. Spotlight Webinars are presented by national experts and innovative practitioners, and highlight Digital Library resources on timely and relevant topics. The webinars were followed by forums hosted by those same experts. Spotlight Forums provide opportunities for educators from across the country to discuss the resources and Webinars. Newly released last fall are Playlist resources, which are collections of Smarter Balanced Digital Library resources based on particular content or topics. We will be focusing on Playlists in this workshop. Materials required: California Department of Education

Digital Library Resources Must incorporate one or more attributes of the formative assessment process Highlights connection to the formative assessment process Search or filter by formative assessment attribute Assessment literacy modules, Formative Assessment in Action videos 2 minutes for slides 16 & 17 Running time = 31 minutes Slide intent: The purpose of this slide is to remind participants that the Smarter Balanced Digital Library resources support formative assessment practices. Presenter says: It is important to remember that each resource within the Smarter Balanced Digital Library is intended to help educators implement the formative assessment process in the classroom. This is in part what makes the Smarter Balanced Digital Library significantly different from other online collections of instructional resources. One of the primary criteria reviewers consider is whether the resource incorporates high-quality formative assessment practices. Each resource much address one or more of the attributes of formative assessment. Within the resource summary, the contributor articulates the specific connection to the formative assessment process, and identifies which attributes the resource supports teachers to implement. Does it help the teacher to clarify intended learning? To elicit evidence of learning? To interpret that evidence? Or to act on the evidence to improve teaching and learning? The Smarter Balanced Digital Library users can search or filter based on one or more of the attributes of formative assessment. For example, an eighth grade mathematic teacher might look for common-core aligned resources that specifically demonstrate strategies to elicit evidence of student learning while teaching a particular topic. Or a teacher collaborative team could search for a professional learning resource to help them better understand ways to clarify intended learning with K-2 students. The Smarter Balanced Digital Library also includes several interactive modules that are intended to help build assessment literacy among educators, teaching about and illustrating the formative assessment process. The California Formative Assessment in Action Videos are also included within the resources submitted by those contributors. Materials required: California Department of Education

Digital Library Enhancements: 2016–17 November 2016 New Resource Type: Playlists Setting and tracking goals for resource rating December 2016 User self-registration and password reset January 2017 Personal favorites resource collections District and regional groups/forums 2 minutes for slides 16 & 17 Running time = 31 minutes Slide intent: This slide is intended to highlight the recent enhancements to the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. Presenter says: The Smarter Balanced Digital Library continues to be enhanced based on suggestions and feedback from state teams and from educators. There are several enhancements recently released and still planned for the 2016-17 school year. In November, a new Smarter Balanced Digital Library Resource type was established, called Playlists. We will be talking more about these shortly. Also beginning last fall, users can set personal goals on the number of resources they would like to rate within the system. Rating resources is a great benefit to other users as they can see how other teachers used the resource, how valuable they felt it was to improve student learning and support their own professional development, and how easy the resource was to use/implement in the classroom. In December 2016, Smarter Balanced launched a user self-registration process. Previously, all user credentials had to be established by an LEA or Site CAASPP Coordinator. The new self-registration system provides an additional option through which educators with an e-mail address associated with a public school system domain can register themselves and immediately receive credentials to access the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. The user self-registration system is available at http://www.smarterbalanced.org/educators/. Two additional enhancements have just been launched, including the ability for users to organize their favorites into collections, and an option to establish local groups or forums to allow educators to collaborate around specific Smarter Balanced Digital Library resources or groups of resources. These improvements are going to support your ability to implement formative assessment practices in the classroom. Materials required: California Department of Education

New Digital Library Resource Type Playlists: Groups of related resources on specific content or topics 1 minute Running time = 32 minutes Slide intent: This slide is intended to introduce the Playlist feature in the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. Presenter says: When you hear the term “Playlist,” what usually comes to mind? (Accept a couple of call-outs from the audience). Usually, we think of collections of music on our iPod or our computer. Playlists provide a way to logically group music by topic, intended use or theme, e.g., a holiday music playlist or a workout playlist. Well, Smarter Balanced has now added a Playlist feature to the Digital Library. The Digital Library Playlists are groups of related resources tied to particular content or topics. Materials required: California Department of Education

Digital Library Playlists – Resource Type Filter 1 minute Running time = 33 minutes Slide intent: The purpose of this slide is to show how to access the Playlists within the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. Presenter says: You have access to all playlists from within the Smarter Balanced Digital Library, under the “Resource Type” drop-down filter. Materials required: California Department of Education

Professional Learning Series Created by the CDE in collaboration with California SNE members Identify sets of the Smarter Balanced Digital Library interactive modules that relate to timely professional learning topics 2 minutes for slides 20 - 22 Running time = 35 minutes Slide intent: This slide is intended to introduce the Professional Learning Series. Presenter says: Currently, there are three types of Playlists available through the California Department of Education Digital Library Resource Collections page, The first type of Playlist available through the California Department of Education Digital Library Resource Collections page is the Professional Learning Series. These resource lists are designed to connect educators with resources in the Digital Library that directly relate to timely professional learning topics. The intention is that these resources will also support your ability to implement formative assessment practices in your classrooms. It’s important to note that the playlists group resources that existed at the time of their creation and DO NOT contain resources submitted after the playlist was created. Materials required: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/documents/plsformadvan.pdf California Department of Education

Instructional Learning Series Created by the CDE in collaboration with California State Network of Educators (SNE) members Provide a collection of quality instructional resources that support content of the given IAB 2 minutes for slides 20 - 22 Running time = 35 minutes Slide intent: This slide is intended to introduce the Instructional Learning Series. Presenter says: The second type of Playlist available through the California Department of Education Digital Library Resource Collections page is the Instructional Learning Series. These resource lists are designed to connect educators with resources in the Digital Library that directly relate to specific Interim Assessment Blocks, and to support you as you implement formative assessment practices in your daily classroom work. Materials required: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/g6readinfotext.asp California Department of Education

California Department of Education Connections Playlist Created by Smarter Balanced and educators in the consortium Link IAB performance results to specific instructional resources in the Smarter Balanced Digital Library 2 minutes for slides 20 - 22 Running time = 35 minutes Slide intent: This slide is intended to introduce the three types of Playlists. Presenter says: The third is called Connections. These resource lists are designed to connect Digital Library resources that may provide the “next steps” for students considering achievement level on the interim assessment block along with other classroom assessment and professional judgment. Materials required: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/collectionresources.asp California Department of Education

Activity: Exploring Digital Library Playlists Four sample playlists, each with a subset of the associated resources, are on your flash drive Each table will review and discuss one of the samples 5 minutes Running time = 40 minutes Slide intent: This slide is intended to provide participants with an introduction to the activity. Presenter says: Because Playlists are a new resource type that we think will be very valuable to districts, schools, teacher teams, and individual teachers, we would like to give you some time to explore one of the Playlists and discuss how you think it might support teachers to better understand and implement formative assessment practices within common-core aligned instruction. For the purpose of our activity, we will not be working with the Professional Learning Series resource lists as these resources are all interactive modules that can only be accessed within the Digital Library; we cannot download them to the flash drive. We’ve selected four Playlists for our activity. For each of the Playlists we’ve selected, your flash drive includes the Playlist itself and the materials associated with three of the linked resources. You will find the Playlists on your flash drive in the Formative Assessment/Digital Library break-out session folder. Within this folder, there are four sub-folders labeled Playlist followed by the name of a specific Playlist. Within each of these subfolders is a pdf of the Playlist itself, followed by three zip folders that contains the contents of three of the resources identified in the Playlist. We are going to ask each table to explore ONE Playlist to start becoming familiar with the format and contents. Tables 1, 2, 3 and 4 will work with Playlist 1. Tables 5, 6, 7 and 8 will work with Playlist 2. Tables 9, 10 and 11 will work with Playlist 3. Tables 12, 13, 14 and 15 will work with Playlist 4. You will be accessing the Playlist resources from the flash drives using your computer devices. (Move to next slide to start discussion) Materials required: California Department of Education

Activity: Exploring Digital Library Playlists (cont.) As a table group, review your assigned Smarter Balanced Digital Library playlist and consider: What do the resources on the playlist contain that support quality teaching practices? How might resources in the playlist strengthen instruction of content aligned with the Interim Assessment Blocks? 15 minutes (adjust as needed based on overall session time to this point) Running time = 55 minutes Slide intent: This slide is intended to provide participants with time to explore one of the Playlists. Presenter says: We are going to give you 10 minutes, as a table, to look at the Playlist itself as well as the sample resources. While you are exploring the resources on this Playlist, discuss: What do the resources on the playlist contain that support quality teaching practices? How might resources in the playlist strengthen instruction of content aligned with the Interim Assessment Blocks? (Provide 10 minutes for review and table talk) (Identify 3 tables from different Playlist types to briefly share out their conversation around the guiding questions; 1 minute each for total of 3 minutes) Materials required: California Department of Education

Maximizing Educator Use of the Digital Library What are you doing to maximize teacher use of the Smarter Balanced Digital Library to support implementing formative assessment practices in the classroom? What might be some next steps based on what you’ve learned today? share 5 minutes for slides 25 & 26 Running time = 60 minutes Slide intent: The purpose of this slide is to share ideas for increasing educator use of the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. Presenter says: The Smarter Balanced Digital Library provides a great collection of high-quality resources to support teachers in implementing formative assessment practices within common-core aligned instruction. We know, however, that not all educators are fully familiar with the Smarter Balanced Digital Library nor using it to support instruction and professional learning. What might be some next steps in your district or school to continue increasing use of the Smarter Balanced Digital Library to support formative assessment practices in the classroom? (Solicit sharing from 3-4 folks – use roving table mics. If there is no sharing, go to next slide.) Materials required: California Department of Education

How To Promote Educator Use of the Digital Library E-mail the link to a resource that supports instruction around a particularly challenging topic or skill Illustrate a resource during a professional learning/instructional planning session with a group of teachers Target a specific formative assessment attribute as part of a district or school implementation plan Practice implementation and share through collaborative teams Guide school-wide or grade/subject-specific professional development through watching and discussing a Formative Assessment in Action video 5 minutes for slides 25 & 26 Running time = 60 minutes Slide intent: The purpose of this slide is to share ideas for promoting use of the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. Presenter says: (Depending on what is shared for slide 27, determine whether to highlight all or some of these ideas) Here are some examples of how districts and schools are supporting educators to use the Smarter Balanced Digital Library Share Featured Smarter Balanced Digital Library resources with targeted audiences (for example, a school literacy coach or a department chair might e-mail the link to a resource during a professional learning/instructional planning session with a group of teachers, or email a resource that supports instruction around a particularly challenging topic or skill). The weekly CDE CAASPP e-mail update often includes a link to a featured Smarter Balanced Digital Library resource. As a school, grade-level, or subject area team, target a specific formative assessment attribute as part of a district or school implementation plan. Provide time for teachers to find grade-level appropriate resources that illustrate that particular attribute. Practice implementation and share through collaborative teams. Use a CDE-produced Formative Assessment in Action video or one of the commissioned modules within the Smarter Balanced Digital Library to guide schoolwide or grade/subject-specific professional development. Have teachers practice implementing a strategy and share their experience within a Professional Learning Community (PLC) or other collaborative group. Use the new District/Regional group forum feature to engage teachers in collaborative dialogue about one or more of the Smarter Balanced Digital Library Resources. Have teachers share their Favorites collections with each other which is a new feature in the digital library. Use one of the CDE’s CAASPP in Action reports to promote districtwide or schoolwide conversation about implementing formative assessment practices with support from the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. Finally, back at your LEAs, please advocate the importance of providing teachers with dedicated time to explore the Smarter Balanced Digital Library so they may become familiar with the whole range of available resources. California Department of Education

Implementation Planning 13 minutes Running time = 73 minutes Slide intent: The purpose of this slide is to introduce an Implementation Planning during the Institute or back in their district or school. Presenter says: Some of you may have seen a document similar to this if you attended one of last year’s CAASPP Institutes or the Spring 2016 posttest workshop. This particular version has some questions to consider as you work with your school or district team on building teacher capacity to implement formative assessment practices with support from the Smarter Balanced Digital Library The top left portion of this form provides some guiding questions to consider. The four boxes to the right of those guiding questions offer a place for your to make notes about critical stakeholders, challenges, leadership, and communication related to implementation. At the bottom is a place to map out a rough timeline of activities over the next few months. This tool might support your work during your team planning time both here and back in your district or school. California Department of Education
