Who was Alfred Wegener? Alfred Wegener was a young German scientist who in 1910 proposed that the continents moved. What was Wegener’s hypothesis?

Science Questions By: Emma L.. 2a Defining What is a convection current? The movement of a fluid, caused by differences in temperature, that transfers.
 Composition: Silicon, Oxygen, and Aluminum  Types: › Continental Crust: solid & rocky outer layer › Oceanic Crust: thin & dense material.
CONVECTION CURRENTS A quick review using white boards.
The Four Layers The Earth is composed of four different layers. The crust is the layer that you live on, and it is the most widely studied and understood.

9.3 Theory of Plate Tectonics. I. Earth’s Moving Plates A.Earth’s crust is broken into LARGE pieces called “plates” 1.Plates contain continents and oceans.
T ODAY WE WILL IDENTIFY THE CAUSES OF CONTINENTAL DRIFT.
Putting it together You know that our Earth is separated into moving plates You know that the continents are drifting and colliding BUT HOW?
EVIDENCE OF CONTINENTAL DRIFT - Similarities in coastlines of continents - same Fossils found on eastern S. America and west Africa - Rock type and age.

convection currents in the mantle lead to the deposit of new material to the crust on the ocean floor, the convection current cycle is caused by the hot mantle semi-solid molting rock rising to the surface due to its decreased density because of extreme heat as the hotter mantle material reaches toward the crust, it cools somewhat and become more dense and sinks, thereby completing the cycle, and hotter material again rises toward the crust, cools somewhat and sinks again completing the convection current cycle.

as new crust material from the upward-moving mantle, is added, it forces older crust away from the site of the deposit area, which pushes the entire plate of crust away the moving crust will then interact with other plates that are in motion from other sites as a result, entire continents are slowly and steadily moved across the surface of the Earth, and the ultimate result of such continental drift
