Engaging Your Students with their Devices Mickey Obermire Clovis Adult Education OTAN Trainer OTAN is of the three state leadership projects. 25 Year anniversary in 2014. 1

Features: Clovis Adult Education Uses all learning modalities Once downloaded, can be used with all its features without WiFi Quizlet sets can be as simple as 2 questions with their answers. Students learn when they create their own Quizlet sets. Collaboration is easy & efficient with classmates & teachers. Quizlet sets can include text, math formulas, foreign words, audio, and graphics.

Study Options Students have 5 ways to study the materials. There are options within each of these five ways that can be adapted to the students needs.

Study Options: Learn This is the starting point for learning. Students are given 7 randomized questions form the set. They can select star to ones they don’t know yet. Options include Audio on or off; format of questions (terms or definitions),Question types, Flashcards, written questions, and/or multiple choice.

Study Options: Flashcards Shows all of the cards in the set. Options allow audio on/off and normal/slow audio. The pencil icon opens both sides (question & answer) on one screen. This helps visual learners.

Study Options: Write Shows all of the cards in the set. Options allow audio on/off. A “Don’t Know” option shows the answer, can read it aloud, and allows the student to copy the answer correctly. If the answer is close to correct, there is an option to override the card. At the end, all missed questions are returned to study.

Study Options: Spell Spell works well with Audio learners and those who need to improve their spelling. The audio can be set to normal of slow speed. They can listen to the question multiple times and write the answer.

Study Options: Test The test option is used after one or a combination of the 4 study module is used. The Options allow the student to create a test that will be similar or exactly the same as the test in class. They have options to select the question types, all the questions or just the starred (missed) questions, and if available, show/hide images. The student can repeat this test until they achieve 100%.

Gaming Options There are two gaming apps that use the study material were they can compete against themselves and their classmates. The gaming options reinforce the learning using the kinesthetic/visual modalities.

Gaming: Match The Match game has the student drag and drop the matching items with 6 choices down to one. After completion, student receives and badge and a place on the leaderboard against themselves and thier classmates.

Gaming: Match After completion, student receives and badge and a place on the leaderboard against themselves and their classmates. When they play again, the next 6 items are randomized, including previously shown items.

Gaming: Gravity

Gaming: Gravity Gravity requires the answer to be keyed in before the meteor hits the planet. If you get it wrong or can’t type the answer quickly, the answer is shown. This question will reappear randomly.

Using your cell phone, go to Quizlet.Live Quizlet.Live provides a live competition with students divided into random or defined teams. Using your cell phone, go to Quizlet.Live https://quizlet.com/_4jdtoa Quizlet live uses collaborative learning. Students can be grouped randomly or by teacher assignment. Each group has 3-4 members. They all have the same questions, but they are delivered in random order. If a team misses a question, they are returned to the beginning and given the correct answer. This competitive activity engages all of the learning modalities as they discuss the options of answers provided.

Examples of Quizlet Sets Quizlet Cartoon Set Quizlet Classroom Set Quizlet Spanish & Math Set Let try a few to show the range.

Adoption: Overview Students began to make & share their own Quizlet sets from class notes with each other Instructor started with conversion of handouts & study guides Made available to all students with links from Moodle Added assignment of a Quizlet set to be submitted to Google Classroom for each lesson Consolidated, deleted duplications, made corrections & shared with class. Participants: Mickey Obermire, CMA Instructor CMA Students in Classes 39-45 I knew this app had potential when I heard my students discussing it in class with each other unprompted. I added all of my study guides to Quizlet

First steps Added link as a Study Tool to Moodle (voluntary use) Students discovered its usefulness. Students began to volunteer to make sets on individual topics All students had access to class sets. Instructor attended Quizlet Un-confernce 8/19/17 Instructor added all quiz study guides to Quizlet.

Second Steps Added Quizlet assignment. (mandatory use) Students volunteered topics to reduce duplication. All sets submitted to Google Classroom. Sets are then combined, duplicates removed, corrections made, graphics added. Sets are made available to all students with a Remind notice.

Project challenges & accomplishments Some students didn’t contribute Initially, students didn’t use the resource WiFi issues were addressed Classroom discussions and sharing experiences Quizlet.Live added to Daily review before testing Grades improved in ALL students; increased student retention Learning becomes FUN! I can update my materials and quizzes with a quick change to Quizlet. I have increased my number of terms used in Medical Terminology without the tediousness of having to have an entire courses study guides revised before the class starts. Utilizing Moodle, I can take one definition and randomize multiple terms for that definition. Example: There are 7 combining forms for the male sex organ.

Students are Engaged and Empowered Daily Competition inspires students to review the sets. Missed material is isolated and can be further explained to the class for clarification. Students can practice in the best way that they learn. After one week in class, students are singing their praises of using Quizlet. After each Quizlet.Live Session, meaningful review of confusing topics. Significantly increased grades and learning across the class.

And one last thing… Quizlet.Live in Action
