Figure 2 Obesity and male infertility: mechanisms. Obesity operates through multiple pathways to alter male reproductive potential. It creates epigenetic changes, some of which can influence subsequent generations. In addition, it alters the male androgenic axis, influences a host of other “neohormones,” and raises insulin levels. Finally, it has been linked to erectile dysfunction and causes stress, inflammation and sleep apnea, all of which can further reduce male fertility. Kp = kisspeptin.
