Rhyming words. Find words to rhyme with each of these. book look hook nook cook rook sook took crook moon goon June dune soon tune hoon

What is the same about each group of pictures. Say the words aloud. Click the box for the answer. Yellow box all have long oo sound: tatoo, moon, baboon, igloo, moose, shoot, boot, hoop, rooster, boot, scoop, goose, spoon, broom, noodles. Blue group all have short oo sound:- book, foot, hook, cook, pool, woodpecker, wool

Sort all of your bottle top letters into vowels and consonants. Long and short ‘oo’ sounds are vowels. All letters in our alphabet belong to one of two groups The ‘oo’ in (room) is a long vowel sound. It is made with the tip of the tongue down behind the bottom teeth and the back of the tongue is high in the back of the mouth. The lips are rounded, the jaw is loose and the teeth are apart. The ‘oo’ in book is a short, unvoiced vowel sound. In this sound the tongue relaxes. Say ‘oo as in room’ then relax the tongue. The Short ‘oo’ is the only short vowel with rounded lips. Sort all of your bottle top letters into vowels and consonants. We need to know whether a letter is a vowel or consonant to help us apply spelling rules.

Use your ears and listen carefully. Complete the requirements for the next screen before proceeding. See Instructions. Use your ears and listen carefully.

Oona is going to visit Great Aunt Ivy Oona is going to visit Great Aunt Ivy. Oona likes visiting Great Aunt Ivy because she has lots of interesting things and a large friendly cat called Noodle. The thing Oona likes best is Great Aunt Ivy’s cuckoo clock. On the hour, a cuckoo pops out from the little wooden door at the top, calling, “oo oo, oo oo.” Noodle and Oona like to wait underneath the clock, knowing that the cuckoo will come out soon. As the cuckoo goes in and out, Oona pretends to be the cuckoo, and says, “Cook-oo, Cook-oo.”

How to write the letters ‘ng nk’ Linked script is far better to write than printing. It is faster, easier, more comfortable to write for long periods and your brain learns the words better if they are linked. oo cooking noodles

Instructions. Slide 2 counting sounds in a word. The answer is frequently not the same as the number of letters in the word. Slide 3 Rhyming words Slide 4 Hearing short oo long oo sound. Slide 5– knowing vowels and consonants is vital for learning spelling rules. Multisensory learning (feeling the formation of a sound) is useful for many students. Rule 1: If the short vowel pronunciation doesn’t work to make a word try the long vowel. Slide 6 , 7 . Read the story for oo oo aloud. Ask each student to keep a tally of how many oo sounds they hear in the story. Compare results. They need to use ears not eyes. Hand each student a copy of the story. Read it aloud again and have students mark each ‘oo’ sound as they go. Slide 8–writing oo and linking. Handwriting I have used Sego Script because it is freely available on most computers . Research is now showing that linked script is more ergonomic and helps with retention of spelling. Many prospective employers are expecting job applications to be handwritten and many exams have to be handwritten. It is still a necessary skill. Slide 9- Listening activity to distinguish short oo and long oo. Slides 10 How many words can students make? Slide 11 and 12 Tricky words. These words are high frequency, often non phonetic and have to be learnt by rote for both spelling and reading. Spell with alphabet names. Do not sound.
