Variables: Notes

What are VARIABLES??? Variables are an important part of science projects and experiments. Basically, a variable is any factor that can be controlled, changed, or measured in an experiment. Scientific experiments have several types of variables.

3 Types of Scientific Variables: Independent Variable Dependent Variable Control Variable

Independent Variable: The independent variable is the one condition that you change or manipulate in an experiment. You can choose this… EX: In an experiment testing how light affects plant growth, the type of light or amount of light used is the independent variable.

Dependent Variable: The dependent variable is the variable that you measure or observe. This variable responds to the independent variable.... EX: In an experiment testing how light affects plant growth, the growth of the plants is the dependent variable.

Control Variable: A controlled variable or constant variable is a variable that does not change during an experiment. This variable remains the SAME throughout the experiment. EX: In an experiment testing how light affects plant growth, the type of plant would be the control variable.
