Jonathan – Saul’s Successful Son 1 Samuel 14:1-4

Saul, Son of Kish Saul married Ahinoam, daughter of Ahimaaz, with whom he had four sons (Jonathan, Abinadab, Malchishua and Ish-bosheth) and two daughters (Merab and Michal). (1 Samuel 14:51; 2 Samuel 2:8; 1 Chronicles 8:33) Saul also had a concubine named Rizpah, daughter of Aiah, who bore him two sons, Armoni and Mephibosheth. (2 Samuel 21:8)

Saul, Son of Kish Saul died at the Battle of Mount Gilboa (1 Samuel 31:3–6; 1 Chronicles 10:3–6), and was buried in Zelah, in the region of Benjamin (2 Samuel 21:14). Three of Saul’s sons – Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua – died with him at Mount Gilboa (1 Samuel 31:2; 1 Chronicles 10:2). Ish-bosheth became king of Israel, at the age of forty. Ish-bosheth reigned for two years and was killed by two of his own captains (2 Samuel 4:5).

Saul, Son of Kish The only male descendant of Saul to survive was Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s lame son (2 Samuel 4:4), who was five years old at the time of his father’s and grandfather’s deaths. In time, he came under the protection of David (2 Samuel 9:7–13).

Jonathan – Saul’s Successful Son His Objective. (1 Samuel 14:1). The rest of the people were “waiting at the edge of Gibeah.” Our Objectives. cf. (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15; Colossians 1:23).

Jonathan – Saul’s Successful Son His Obstacles. 1 Samuel 14:4-5, “Jonathan went up on his hands and on his feet” (14:13). Apostles’ Obstacles. Acts 4-5; 14; 16; 2 Corinthians 11:23-29 Our Obstacles. Family and friends. Matthew 10:34-36 Discouragements. 1 Samuel 13:5-7; 14:21

Jonathan – Saul’s Successful Son His Optimism. (1 Samuel 14:6-7) Our Optimism. Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things in him that strengtheneth me.”

Jonathan – Saul’s Successful Son His Observation. 1 Samuel 14:8-12, “for Jehovah hath delivered them into the hand of Israel” When we depend upon our own abilities and resources to fight our battles and we forget about God, we’re going to find ourselves severely lacking. cf. David (1 Samuel 17) Our Observation. John 4:35, “Say not ye, There are yet four months, and (then) cometh the harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, that they are white already unto harvest.”

Jonathan – Saul’s Successful Son His Outcome. (1 Samuel 14:13-14). The Philistines were afraid. 1 Samuel 14:16, 19, 20 The Israelites were encouraged. 1 Samuel 14:21-22 Our Outcome. Victory over our foes. Taking up the whole armor of God we will “be able to withstand in the evil day” (Ephesians 6:13). Yes, “we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” (Romans 8:37).

Jonathan – Saul’s Successful Son In lamenting the death of Jonathan, David said, “How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle!” (2 Samuel 1:25). By imitating his good example we too can be successful soldiers in the Lord’s army. “Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armor, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison, that is on yonder side” (1 Samuel 14:1)
