THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM By Jordan Green

THE MOUTH The mouth is the beginning of digestion Inside of the mouth food is broken down by the teeth and saliva to make the food easier to digest

ESOPHAGUS After the mouth comes the esophagus which is the simplest part or phase of the digestive system. The only thing it does is use the saliva to help the food slip down and into the stomach

Stomach In the stomach food is broken down even further by bile so food is small enough to pass through the intestines The stomach also stores food until its small enough and broken down enough to move through the small and large intestines

SMALL INTESTINE The small intestine is responsible for absorbing most of the nutrients found within your food. Once the food gets here its already a liquid and is easier to extract nutrients. After the small intestine is the large intestine.

LARGE INTESTINE The large intestine is the thick, lower end of the digestive system which includes the appendix, colon and rectum. Its function is to reabsorb water and maintain the fluid balance of the body. After here is the rectum.

RECTUM The rectum is the muscular ring that is at the end of the large intestine before the anus. Its main function of the rectum is to act as a temporary storage site for fecal matter before it is eliminated from the body through the anus.

ANUS The anus is the last part of the digestive system. The main function of the anus is to dispose of waste (poop) products out of the body.
