Editing and Revising

What does REVISING and EDITING BOTH do? Helps the reader read along smoothly Improves the quality of the writing

Revising Adding, changing, or deleting parts of the piece to help the writing flow Turn WORN OUT words into VIVID WORDS Coming up with an interesting lead that hooks the reader Coming up with a conclusion that sums things up Adding specific descriptions, explanations, and details Organizing ideas in an order that makes sense Use ARMS to help writers understand what “revision” means Abell & Atherton

ARMS Add – (details, snapshots, dialogue, examples, etc.) Remove – (distractors, unnecessary dialogue, details that don’t fit, weak ideas) Move – (words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs) Substitute – (more powerful words, stronger verbs for adverbs)
