Explanation of Three Variables If we’re talking about systems of equations with three variables, then graphically, we’re talking about three PLANES, not lines. Because of this, we now only have two methods for solving, SUBSTITUTION and ELIMINATION.
Elimination EX 1: Solve the system of equations by elimination: x – 2y + z = 15 2x + 3y – 3z = 1 4x + 10y – 5z = -3
Substitution EX 2: Solve the system of equations by substitution: 4x = -8z 3x – 2y + z = 0 -2x + y – z = -1
