Ecosystems What is ecology?.
Population Ecology Notes
Food Chain & Food Web A food chain shows HOW each living thing gets its food. A food web consists of several food chains A food web = multiple food chains.
Organism Interactions. How do organisms interact in an ecosystem? A community is… All the biotic factors within an ecosystem. How do the different populations.

POPULATION ECOLOGY. HOW DO POPULATIONS CHANGE?  What is a population?  All members of a species living in the same place at the same time  They usually.
 All living things interact with their environment, both biotic and abiotic  Most living things produce more offspring than can survive.

20.1: Species Interactions (Part II)
Presentation transcript:

Ecology

Competition: The Fight for Resources Occurs when 2 organisms need the same resources in the same space at the same time. Can occur among a species or multiple species. Examples: 2 lions compete for a mate Lion and Hyena fight over food Video

Results of Competition What will happen if 2 species use exactly the same resource in the same way? 1. One species will dominate and the other will die off. 2. One species will adapt to use the resource differently or use another resource.

Carrying Capacity The carrying capacity is largest number of individuals an environment can support. Carrying capacity changes when there is an increase or decrease in the number of organisms in an environment.

Carrying Capacity What will happen to the carrying capacity if producers were removed from the population? What will happen to the carrying capacity if a population is faced with drought? What will happen to the carrying capacity if a predator was removed from the population? Carrying capacity will decrease Carrying capacity will decrease Carrying capacity will increase

Make a Food Chain Seeds  Rabbits  Snakes  Hawks What would happen to the following if seeds were removed from the above food chain? Rabbit - Decrease Hawk - Decrease Snake - Decrease Carrying Capacity - Decrease Will competition increase or decrease? Increase

Make a food pyramid Fish – Increase Zooplankton – Decrease What would happen to each of the following if sharks become extinct? Shark Fish Fish – Increase Zooplankton – Decrease Algae – Increase Zooplankton Algae
