Biotechnology - Theory and Application

Biotechnology The manipulation of bio chemicals, mostly DNA and Proteins Based on new techniques, developed over the last 25-30 years Has both a scientific and Economic/Business meaning

Biotechnology - Theory and Techniques How/why does it work? All organisms on Earth have DNA and all DNA works the same. All DNA provides instructions to produce proteins that are made of Amino Acids.

Biotechnology - Theory Biotechnology works by manipulating DNA Cut into pieces at known locations Recombine with other DNA pieces Separate by size

Biotechnology - Applications Genetic Sequencing Crime scene/forensic work Genetic screening Human genome project Evolutionary analysis

Biotechnology - Applications Recombinant DNA technology Cloning Genetic engineering Genetically modified organisms

Biotechnology - Techniques Gel Electrophoresis separates molecular fragments by size

Biotechnology - Techniques Recombinant DNA combines DNA from different organisms

Biotechnology - Techniques PCR (polymerase chain reaction) produces lots of DNA from a small original amount
