Motion transmission systems Engineering Motion transmission systems
What is a motion transformation system? It is a system that turns one type of motion into another. Most of the time, there devices transform a rotational motion into a translation motion, or vice versa.
Examples of motion transformation systems Rack and pinion Cam and follower Connecting rod and crank Examples of motion transformation systems
Rack and pinions It is made up of a toothed wheel (pinion) and a straight toothed rod (rack). When the pinion is rotated, it moves the rack because the teeth of the two parts fit into each other.
Example of rack and pinion
Cam and follower Transform a rotational motion into a bidirectional translational motion. A cam is a part that is oval- shaped, or that rotates off- centre.
Example of cam and follower
Connecting rod and crank The crank is the part that rotates, while the connecting rod is a bar or stem attached to the crank.
