L.O: SWBAT explain THE GREEN HOUSE EFFECT Do Now:11 &13.

Radiative balance: When the incoming & outgoing energy balance, earth’s temperature is stable (radiative balance). What do you notice? 2. Earth gives off infrared heat energy back into space. 1. Earth gets insolation (visible light energy) from the sun. 3. Earth reflects some solar energy back into space.

The SUN is the source of Earth’s light (& heat).

When the sunlight reaches Earth, the Earth: absorbs some, and reradiates the rest as infrared energy “heat”! The infrared energy (heat) leaving the Earth is long-waves. The Visible light reaching the Earth in short-waves.

A “greenhouse” is a glasshouse, where sunlight enters, turns into heat (infrared) and is trapped. Because they are very hot, greenhouses are used to grow tropical plants, even though it freezing outside. Greenhouse Closer look Closer look

The Greenhouse Gases The main three greenhouse gases are: Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Methane (CH4) Water Vapor (H2Ov) All three have natural and unnatural origins. they absorb infrared heat and keep the heat from leaving the Earth’s atmosphere!

Natural Increase in CO2 Concentrations There are many natural causes of global warming as well: Volcanic eruptions Changes in insolation from the sun Changes in vegetation on earth Natural changes in atmospheric chemistry. Augustine Volcano, Alaska 2006

Unnatural Increase in CO2 Concentrations Increases in CO2 concentrations can be caused by many factors. Here are two major examples: The burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas, etc.) Deforestation (Forests help remove CO2 from the air)

Global Warming Global warming refers to an increase greenhouse gases caused by both pollution and some natural causes. Recall: the greenhouse gasses TRAPS infrared heat. The increase in greenhouse gas concentrations causes more infrared energy to be absorbed as it leaves earth’s surface. LIKE A GREENHOUSE!!!!!! The result is an increase in global temperatures.

South Cascade Glacier, Washington 1928 1979 2003 South Cascade Glacier, Washington The general retreat of mountain glaciers during the past century is one example of evidence that the climate is changing..

The “Greenhouse Effect” is both good and bad The Good: (Without human intervention) The greenhouse effect helps to naturally moderate our climate. It keeps us from getting too cold. The Bad: (Due to human intervention) The greenhouse effect is being unnaturally enhanced by pollution. This is leading to the major issue of global warming.

How will global warming affect the Earth? The average sea level is predicted to rise by 9 to 88 cm by 2100. Inland regions are projected to warm faster than oceans and coastal zones. Global precipitation is predicted to increase. Hurricanes could be more intense (with stronger winds and more rainfall) and more frequent if the waters are warmer The world is likely to experience more hot days and heat waves and fewer frost days and cold spells. Places by bodies of water may experience Even more intense weather……why? *Hint Lake Erie didn’t freeze for the first Time this year, consequently more evaporation Happened in that area Lake effect snow! The bodies of water wont freeze, which will lead to more evaporation, which leads to more precipitation. This combined with cold temperatures, makes more snowfall!!!!!!!

Which would absorb energy more quickly? Why? Black and rough best absorbs solar radiation. Light and smooth reflects solar radiation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1VWOHB3q7s
