Student Services Information Desk The University of Sheffield Student Services Information Desk (SSiD) is an important point of contact for students throughout their time at the University. SSiD's staff are trained to deal with a wide range of enquiries and the office is a key central point for general information on many University services. We like to think of ourselves as a "one-stop" information service, which aims to answer the majority of student related enquiries from a single location. And if we can’t answer your question, we can direct you to someone who can. The ground-breaking Student Services Information Desk (SSiD) opened its doors to students for the first time in March 1997. In the last ten years we have answered over 800,000 enquiries about a wide variety of subjects. For more information see www.shef.ac.uk/ssid/ Generally known as ‘SSiD’

About SSiD Originally opened March 1997 Open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm Located in Union of Students building Telephone +44 114 222 1299 Fax +44 114 222 1297 Email: www.shef.ac.uk/ssid/email.html Website: www.sheffield.ac.uk/ssid Although we are a part of the University's Student Services Department, we are located in the Union of Students Building. SSiD provides a range of administrative services including Calculator Approval, Student Status letters, Self Certification Medical notes, Summary of Results, Immigration Certifying Letter, Transcripts, etc Most SSiD services are available on demand at the SSiD front desk, so the quickest way to get access to services is if students come into the office. If they are unable to come into SSiD then they can use the phone, email or fax. Furthermore, most of SSiD’s services are available on request at the front desk. However some services where we need to check facts and discuss with other parts of the University may take a week or two to provide. Examples of this is include Immigration Certifying Letter and Short Term Loans. Nearly all of SSiD services are free. However there may be a charge for some services which take a lot of time to organise or generate additional costs. An example of this is the Transcript of Qualification. For more information see www.shef.ac.uk/ssid/contacts/aboutssid.html 22/11/2018 © The University of Sheffield / Department of Marketing and Communications

Access to SSiD Services Web Student area Counter Email Telephone Fax Back office SSiD Web Pages Many students can find the information they are looking for on the SSiD website which contains nearly 1,5000 pages of content. Obviously finding information on such a site could prove difficult but most of the pages are referenced in the A to Z index at: www.shef.ac.uk/ssid/atoz Many students have also found the frequently asked questions section of the website very useful as well. See: www.shef.ac.uk/ssid/faq The Student Area The Student Area contains leaflets, guides, prospectuses, examination timetables, display screens and three open access computer from where students can view and print off our web pages, Front Desk We receive over 100,000 enquiries at the front desk counter each year. At busier time we may not be able to answer the telephone. If students are unable to come into SSiD the we recommend they email enquiries. To help us manage how effectively we respond to emails we have created a series of online forms which can be found at: www.shef.ac.uk/ssid/email.html Back Office The back office is where complex documentation is produced. This includes things such as transcripts, immigration certifying letters, short term loans, career development loans, etc. 22/11/2018 © The University of Sheffield / Department of Marketing and Communications

There are 90,000 visits to the SSiD website a month (400,000 hits). We respond to over 7,000 emails a year. 45% of our customers are International Students. 15% of our customers are given information and initial advice and referred to other parts of the University such as the Union of Students’ Advice Centre, Corporate Information and Computing Services (CiCS), etc. 6% of people coming into the office are just asking for directions. 22/11/2018 © The University of Sheffield / Department of Marketing and Communications
