August 19 Thank you for not chewing gum  Objective: Materials: Pencil, science notebook & folder, Metric Packet, Metric Booklet & Ruler Thank you for not chewing gum  Today’s Agenda: Bell work: Practice Measurements Due Monday: Metric Packet & Instruction Booklet August 19 Objective: SWBAT do metric conversions. Bell Work: What is the volume of the match box? What is the volume of the magnet? What is the mass of the rock?

Metric Summary Chart Copy this chart onto the last page in your booklet and fill in the information. Physical Quantity Definition Base Unit Tool Length Volume Mass Weight Temperature Time

Metric Prefix Ruler On the tape that you got at the door write the metric prefix abbreviations in order as you say the mnemonic. “King Henry doesn’t usually drink chocolate milk” Make the letters large and easy to use. k h dk mlg dc c m

How to do Metric Conversions Add a decimal, if absent, add zeroes to your number. Place finger tool on metric prefix ruler on the known unit. Move your finger tool to the unknown unit counting the number of swings. Move the decimal in your number the same direction, and the same number of swings. Rewrite your new number with the correct unit.

Example Convert 5328 meters into kilometers. K H D M Dc C M Step 1: Put your finger tool on the known unit….meters. Step 2: Move your finger to the unknown unit and count the number of swings. 3 2 1

Step 3: Write your number in a work space and place the decimal at the end. 5328. Step 4: Move the decimal the same direction the same number of swings as on your metric prefix line. Step 5: Write your new number with the decimal in the new spot with the new unit. 5.328 km

Convert .0735 hl into ml .0735 K H D M Dc C M 1 2 3 4 5 3. .0 7 3 5 0 1 2 3 4 5 3. .0 7 3 5 0 1 2 3 4 5 4. ANSWER: 7350 ml Add a Zero when you run out of numbers!
