Synecdoche A figure of speech by which a part is exchanged for the whole.

Examples The old captain yelled “all hands on deck!” This meant for the rest of the crew to take their positions. The hands, represent the entire crewman. 2

Examples The first mate yelled to the crew “I see white sails on the horizon!” The white sails represent entire ships.

Examples The Rancher claimed five thousand heads of cattle on his land. The Rancher means that he has five thousand whole, live cows on his land.
