Solar Radiation and the Atmosphere
Basics of Solar Radiation The sun gives of energy (aka radiation) in all wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. Some types are filtered by Earth’s atmosphere, like UV is by the ozone layer.
Where Does the Solar Energy Go?
Basics of Solar Radiation The angle at which solar radiation reaches the Earth determines the seasons. Play the video and take notes.
Basics of Solar Radiation
Air Mass Movement Air moves around within the atmosphere and gains or loses energy. Gaining or losing energy occurs via three processes: Conduction Convection Radiation
Conduction Conduction occurs when an air mass comes in contact with a heat source. Conduction transfers energy through a medium (any substance). Cold Air Hot Air Hot Ground
Convection Convection occurs when air masses of two different temperatures meet and mix. Cold Air Hot Air Warm Air
Radiation Radiation transfers energy by waves moving through space but there is no movement of the any particles. This involves weak energy waves traveling in all directions from the original energy source.
