What is GALILEO Georgia’s Statewide Virtual Library provided by the state to K12 Full of licensed content such as Encyclopedia Britannica, EBSCO, and SIRS products Unique educational content from reputable sources like the National Science Digital Library (NSDL) http://www.galileo.usg.edu High School—talk about school vs. home access Search Browse by Subject Browse by Type Journals/Magazines A-Z Databases A-Z Teacher Resources TEEN

What is NSDL Established by the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 2000 as an online library providing access for users to exemplary resources for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and research. Provides an organized point of access to high-quality STEM content that is aggregated from a variety of other digital libraries, NSF-funded projects, and NSDL-reviewed web sites. Provides access to services and tools that enhance the use of this content in a variety of contexts. NSDL is designed primarily for K-16 educators. Access to most of the resources discovered through NSDL is free; however, some content providers may require a login, or a nominal fee or subscription to retrieve their specific resources. http://nsdl.org NSDL: -Some things are in GALILEO. -Search grade level -Pathways -K12 portal -Strandmaps with resources

Georgia Performance Standards Include both skills and topics that can be addressed with content in GALILEO Many GALILEO resources include educator resources, including links to content via the GPS curriculum, activities, and other materials. Lexile rankings. GALILEO works with the DOE to increase the integration of GALILEO content into the GPS portal, MyGaDOE http://georgiastandards.org

Examples of GPS Standards & GALILEO/NSDL Examples of materials in GALILEO for particular GPS standards for science images activities maps interactive materials encyclopedia articles articles from magazines, newspapers, and journals books and pamphlets reviewed websites charts and graphs

Kindergarten Earth Science SKE1. Students will describe time patterns (such as day to night and night to day) and objects (such as sun, moon, stars) in the day and night sky. a. Describe changes that occur in the sky during the day, as day turns into night, during the night, and as night turns into day. b. Classify objects according to those seen in the day sky and those seen in the night sky. c. Recognize that the Sun supplies heat and light to Earth.

Grade Three S3E2. Students will investigate fossils as evidence of organisms that lived long ago. a. Investigate fossils by observing authentic fossils or models of fossils or view information resources about fossils as evidence of organisms that lived long ago. b. Describe how a fossil is formed.

Grade Five S5P3. Students will investigate the electricity, magnetism, and their relationship. a. Investigate static electricity. b. Determine the necessary components for completing an electric circuit. c. Investigate common materials to determine if they are insulators or conductors of electricity. d. Compare a bar magnet to an electromagnet.

Grade Seven S7L2. Students will describe the structure and function of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. a. Explain that cells take in nutrients in order to grow and divide and to make needed materials. b. Relate cell structures (cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplasts, mitochondria) to basic cell functions. c. Explain that cells are organized into tissues, tissues into organs, organs into systems, and systems into organisms. d. Explain that tissues, organs, and organ systems serve the needs cells have for oxygen, food, and waste removal. e. Explain the purpose of the major organ systems in the human body (i.e., digestion, respiration, reproduction, circulation, excretion, movement, control, and coordination, and for protection from disease).

High School SEV2. Students will demonstrate an understanding that the Earth is one interconnected system. a. Describe how the abiotic components (water, air, and energy) affect the biosphere. b. Recognize and give examples of the hierarchy of the biological entities of the biosphere (organisms, populations, communities, ecosystems, and biosphere). c. Characterize the components that define a Biome. Abiotic Factors – to include precipitation, temperature and soils. Biotic Factors – plant and animal adaptations that create success in that biome. d. Characterize the components that define fresh-water and marine systems. Abiotic Factors – to include light, dissolved oxygen, phosphorus, nitrogen, pH and substrate. Biotic Factors – plant and animal adaptations characteristic to that system.
