a Modern Day Tragic Hero Janis Joplin a Modern Day Tragic Hero Stress and pressure to achieve openly makes her drug and alcohol abuse more obvious 1969- Performs most-recognized performance at Woodstock 1967- Joined the band Big Brother and became known for performance of “Ball and Chain” Openly discusses stress of competing/ being compared to male artists in interview on September 30, 1970. In San Francisco, she began her addiction to drugs Became involved in music at the age of 6. Died October 4, 1970 of heroin overdose Began to rebel against the late 50’s style of fashion and stood out as promiscuous January 1963 Dropped out of college in order to focus on a music career. She moved to San Francisco Born January 19, 1943 1968- Left Big Brother to pursue solo career Well known/ famed: Became a famous singer starting in 1967 when joining the Big Brother band. Lack of responsibility for flaw: Begins addiction with drugs and alcohol and never works towards fixing addiction Shortcoming that causes demise: Succumbing to stress and pressure of the “competition” in fame and increasing drug use Ruin or suffering resulting from downfall: Dies from drug overdose Moral lesson/ Catharsis: Those under pressure to succeed should never look to drugs for help.
