Writing Sentences Unit 1: Lesson 7

Remember French in its every-day usage is written exactly as English USED to be written. Example: What is it that this is? in our older version of formal English is the direct translation of the modern French question Quest-ce que cest?

Identification v. Description In this unit, we have been discussing how to identify an object and how to describe it. We discussed sentences of Identification (it is a mouse), of Description (the mouse is gray), and of Descriptive Identification (it is a gray mouse) *Do not forget that, when giving description, you must be careful to place your adjective AFTER the noun it modifies and to MODIFY (change) your adjective to make it agree with the noun it modifies (describes) in Gender (m/f) and in Number (s/p)

Quest-ce que cest? What is it that this/it/that is? This question prompts us to identify an unknown noun or noun grouping. To identify an object or object grouping, we will use general terminology: it/this/that/these/those is/are a/an/1/some

Identification Sentences – 1 SINGULAR: This/that/it is a/an/one …. ce/cest un(e) …. This/That/It is a mouse. mouse = souris (f) Cest une souris. This/That/It is a fish. fish = poisson (m) Cest un poisson.

Identification Sentences – 2 PLURAL: These/those aresome …. ce sont des …. These/Those are some mice. mouse = souris (f) Ce sont des souris. These/Those are some fish. fish = poisson (m) Ce sont des poissons.

Descriptive Identification – 1 SINGULAR: This/That/It is a gray mouse. mouse = souris (f) Cest une souris grise. gray = gris(e)(es) This/That/It is a red fish. fish = poisson (m) Cest un poisson rouge. red = rouge(s)

Descriptive Identification – 2 PLURAL: Those/These are gray mice. mouse = souris (f) Ce sont des souris grises. gray = gris(e)(es) Those/These are red fish. fish = poisson (m) Ce sont des poissons rouges. red = rouge(s)

Quelle couleur est lanimal? Quelles couleurs sont les animaux? What color is the animal? What colors are the animals? This question prompts us to describe a particular animal or group of animals. To describe a particular object or object grouping, we will use specific terminology: the animal(s) is/are

Description – 1 SINGULAR: Quelle couleur est le poisson? (rouge) What color is the fish? (red) Le poisson est rouge. The fish is red. Quelle couleur est la souris? (gris) What color is the mouse? (gray) La souris est grise. The mouse is gray

Description – 2 PLURAL: Quelle couleur* sont les poissons? (rouge) What color are the fish? (red) Les poissons sont rouges. The fish are red. Quelles couleurs* sont les souris? (gris, blanc) What colors are the mice? (gray, white) Les souris sont grises et blanches. The mice are gray and white. *what color (implies that they are only one color) v. what colors (implies the possibility that they might be more than one color)
