Lesson Plan

Consolidate the students’ learning Consolidate the students’ learning (10 minutes) Objective: Teacher consolidates the students’ learning through Q&A and revises using Student Handouts. Resources: PowerPoint(slide 4), Student Handouts   Rundown: 1. Teacher revises using Student Handouts. 2. Teacher consolidates the students’ learning through Q&A. Suggested Q&A: Why do refugees leave their home country? What happened in Syria? Deprivation of which children’s rights do child refugees face? How international humanitarian NGOs help child refugees?

Take Action: Design a Social Media Post for Child Refugee There are different ways to support child refugee. Apart from donation, you can support them by raising the public’s awareness on the issue. Apply the knowledge you’ve learnt and then design a social media post (eg. Facebook/ Instagram) that can raise students and the public’s awareness on the refugee issues. Take Action: Design a Social Media Post for Child Refugee (30 minutes) Objective: Students apply the knowledge learnt to design a social media post to raise public and other students’ awareness on child refugee issues. Students are encouraged to respond through positive actions. Resources: PowerPoint(slide 5-7), A3 blank papers, Student Handouts, Worksheet: Design a Social Media Post (Attachment 1)   Rundown: 1. Introduce the learning objective of this lesson. 2. Divide the class into groups of 4 – 6 students. Distribute one A3 blank paper (and/or Worksheet) to each group. Choose one of the children’s rights as a focus (right to survival/ right to protection/ right to development) Enhance audiences’ awareness on Syria Refugee Crisis Suggest at least 1 idea that audiences can do to help the Syrian child refugees Use attractive design Take Action: Design a Social Media Post for Child Refugee Rundown: 3. Encourage students to design a creative social media post, while fulfilling the following objectives: Enable audiences to understand the situation of child refugees. Choose one of the children’s rights as a focus (rights to survival/ rights to protection/ rights to development) Enhance audiences’ awareness on Syria Refugee Crisis Suggest at least 1 idea that audiences can do to help the Syrian child refugees Use attractive design Time for design: around 15 – 20 minutes   4. Group Sharing: Invite each group to present their design.

Extended Learning: To increase audience involvement, teachers can encourage students to take photos of the post design, and upload them on their social media accounts with hashtag #ActofHumanity and #Your School Name as extended learning activity.
