Strategic Planning Terms and Examples* Vision – Statement of what organization hopes to be in the future Ex. To become the premier research and teaching medical school in the United States. Mission – Statement explaining organizational purpose Ex. Our primary purpose is to educate and train physicians to help people achieve healthy productive lives and advance knowledge in the medical sciences. Goals – Broad statements of long-term desired outcomes Ex. Assure that all graduates demonstrate mastery of the 12 School of Medicine Competences Required of the Contemporary Physician Priorities – 1 to 2 major areas of focus for each goal which serve as the foundation for strategies and action plans over a two-year period Ex. Employ a system-based learning experience that has deeper integration of basic sciences into clinical medicine, is oriented to clinical performance, and uses the best evidenced-based models for medical education to foster student learning Superintendent Focus School Board Focus Board Retreat Staff Focus Strategies and Action Plans – The means to achieving the goals.
