Meckering, Western Australia October 14, 1968 -Earthquake -Took Place: Meckering in Western Australia -On: October 14, 1968 EXTRA: It happened 48 years ago
-It had a Magnitude of: 6.9 -this was the second largest earthquake (in magnitude) in Australia’s recorded history -It also had a Focus Depth of about: 4 miles -It caused $1.5 Million in damage which would now be $57 million
The Fault Line -the Fault line runs about 20 miles long -at some places, one side of the fault line is 5ft taller than the other side -It badly damaged a running track, which you can see in the middle picture -The fault line was so bad, that in even split a highway in-half and badly damaged the rest of it -they have now put up the Fault Line signs, shown here, in different places along the split
Epicenter Map of the Meckering District 1968-1970 -The map shows epicenter locations from 1968-1970 in the Meckering area -all quakes from this one – 1970, were all said to be aftermath shakes -people could feel parts of the earthquake up to 435 miles from the epicenter -that would mean almost 1/5 of Australia would have felt it
-22 people were injured -no deaths were recorded -50 buildings (not including houses) had major damages -only 3 buildings ended up surviving -also, only 16 houses survived -most Perth buildings (81 miles away) swayed for almost 3 mins EXTRA: you can see in the top-right, there is a memorial plaque that was put on the remains of a house
-The black box shows were the picture on the right is located at in Australia -The star on the picture to the right is where the earthquake actually took place -It happened about 81 miles northeast of Perth, which is a major Australian city
-Australia is located in the Indian Australian Plate -The red star shows where It happened In Australia -and the star was enlarged so you would be able to see it better -It happened almost in the middle of the plate -It took place above a divergent boundary and below a convergent boundary
This diagram shows how the earthquake happened This diagram shows how the earthquake happened. Since it’s a divergent boundary, the plates are moving apart. The top picture shows the crust beginning to pull apart from each other. The bottom picture is afterwards, when there is a fault line that was created from the two areas moving apart from each other.
Iceland could be a place where this type of event could happen Iceland could be a place where this type of event could happen. The mid-Atlantic ridge is a major divergent boundary that goes right through Iceland. Australia is located above a divergent boundary, which is where the Meckering earthquake happened. Anywhere along the mid-Atlantic ridge could risk having this kind of earthquake because it is a major divergent boundary.
The United States does not come in contact with a divergent boundary The United States does not come in contact with a divergent boundary. This means that no where in the United States is at risk for the type of earthquake Meckering had. The Hawaiian islands were (and still are) created from subduction boundaries. California, which often has earthquakes, is located on a sliding, subduction boundary also. Alaska is located along a convergent boundary that follows the Aleutian Trench.
