A Walk Through WAI Resources Customize your accessibility program with materials built and maintained at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)

We are W3C Members Sharron Rush Co-founder, ED of Knowbility Co-chair EOWG Robert Jolly Technology Director, Knowbility Member contributor EOWG

Today we would like to… Learn about you, your accessibility needs, program goals Provide background on W3C WAI EO work Point to resources that will help you (and help you find more) Provide time and support for hands-on work with the tools Encourage you to share resources Invite you to join this work

And how about you? What is your role related to accessibility? Developer? Designer? Manager? Policy Maker? Advocate? …. or other role?

We know we need to plan for digital accessibility, but… Intro to Disability Awareness for ACS NCIC We know we need to plan for digital accessibility, but… Where do we start? Knowbility, Inc. 12/16/2010

Web Accessibility Initiative A division of the World Wide Consortium (W3C) Develop global accessibility standards for web content, assistive technology and other user agents, authoring tools, and more Education and Outreach is chartered to translate standards for public understanding and use. w3.org/WAI

Essential Web Components Illustration shows web components used by both developers and users with authoring and evaluation tools on one side and user agents like browsers and assistive technologies on the other. The two sets of tools converge at the top of the diagram labeled web content.

Related tech specs and guidelines The same triangle is now overlaid with a list of specification and guidelines that impact the tools. These include ATAG, WCAG, UAAG as well as HTML, CSS, XML, SVG, SMIL, etc

Intro to Disability Awareness for ACS NCIC Fireman grips firehose with huge output of letters of regulations and guidelines NIMC, DAISY, WCAG, ATAG. 508, etc Accessible vs Inclusive Knowbility, Inc. 12/16/2010

People What if we put people first in planning for digital accessibility? Pictures of people of ages, ethnicities, and ranges of ability.

Accessibility is actually about people. X Checklist first item Checklist second item Checklist third item Accessibility is actually about people.

Intro to Disability Awareness for ACS NCIC accessibility Means that people with disabilities …can acquire the same information …participate in the same activities …actively produce as well as consume online content We often talk of accessibility in terms of adherence to standards. It is good to remember that accessibility is about inclusive design for real people with human needs Knowbility, Inc. 12/16/2010
