Cases of modern day “survival cannibalism” 1820 – the crew of the Essex was lost at sea and survived by eating shipmates that had passed away. 1881 – The Franklin Expedition were British explorers looking for the northwest passage through the Arctic. Search parties and local Inuit found evidence of cannibalism after finding 30 mangled bodies and “left-overs”. 1884 – Richard Parker, young and un-wed sailor was chosen to be cannibalized by the crew of the Mignonette after it sank on its way to Australia. WWII - The Siege of Leningrad by German forces starved out the city of Leningrad in which over 1 million civilians died of starvation. Local militias were formed to hunt for alleged cannibals and 260 people were caught. 1972 – Uruguayan rugby team was stranded in the Andes mountains for two months after a plane crash and were forced to eat those who had died in order to survive.
