Post Secondary Meeting

Post Secondary Meeting Admissions: Applying Early Dates and Deadlines Process Marks and reporting Getting More Information Cost How To Pay Post Secondary Events

Admissions Why apply early? When can you start applying? You receive a student number allowing you to apply for residence. You have an increased focus on your post secondary plans. You remove the pressure of meeting later deadlines. Many offer early admission or conditional acceptance based on early application If you aren’t granted early admission you are rolled over to standard admission (you don’t need to apply twice) When can you start applying? This can be different at every university. A good rule of thumb is early admissions begin in October! See school websites for dates When they end also differs by university. Take the time to check websites so you don’t miss out.

How to Apply Generally completed online Create account (may need AED) Apply Alberta: https://www.applyalberta.ca/pub/ (Each province generally has their own portal - for example Ontario uses https://www.ouac.on.ca/) Self reporting of grades is the norm Make sure you fill out an application for your final transcript to be sent from Alberta Education to each university you are applying to (except Alberta)

Application Dates U of C: Oct 1 - March 1 U of A: Oct 1 - March 1 U of L: OPEN - June 30 SAIT: Oct 3 - Ongoing Admissions MRU: Oct 1 – Feb 1 (Ongoing admissions) UVIC: Sept – Feb 28 UBC: OPEN– Jan 15 Ontario – Late September – dates vary -need to visit individual school websites for more info.

Open House Dates U of C: Saturday, September 29 U of A: Saturday, October 20 U of L: Saturday, October 20 SAIT: October 19 and 20 – one free application in person or online those days MRU: Saturday, October 27 Bow Valley College: Saturday, October 20

What Courses Do Universities Accept? Again, each university and faculty can be different. Generally, you must present four academic grade 12 subjects and 1 option/elective. There is a difference between universities in what they will accept. Some faculties are more restrictive: E.g. Engineering Math 30-1, Math 31, Physics 30, Chemistry 30 and English 30-1

Cost Tuition can be between $5000-15,000 More than just tuition to think about: Books, General Fees, Residence, Apartment, Food, Entertainment… Living At Home: $8000-11 000 Living On-Campus: $16 000-22000 Living Off-Campus: $18 000 - 20 000

My Pass What if I need to order a transcript for an out of province school? How do I see my diploma marks/print a transcript/get a letter of enrollment/find out whether you graduate or not? Email our amazing guidance secretary, Julie McSweeny at jumcsweeny@cbe.ab.ca from your real life email (NOT YOUR CBEEDU one – this will be gone after you graduate). You can find her email on our school website under the departments tab. She will send you instructions on your next steps within a day or two of you sending this request. If you are having problems after this, you can come in to see her.

IPP Support Are you on an IPP? Did you know your accommodations can carry to University and College? Things you need to have/do: Copy of a recent assessment Copy of your IPP Connect with accessibility services at the school you will be attending and they will help you with this ***There will be a fair with more info in February. You will be contacted by resource and we strongly encourage you to attend this.

How To Pay? Scholarships – big websites include https://www.scholarshipscanada.com/ https://www.educationmatters.ca/  https://calgaryfoundation.org/grantsawards-loans/advice-for-students/high-school-students/ http://www.millenniumscholarships.ca/ https://alis.alberta.ca/explore-education-and-training/pay-for-your-education/scholarships-and-bursaries/ https://www.schoolfinder.com/Scholarships/Index.aspx ***It’s early so check to see what might be available . Start collecting reference letters now and put together a brag sheet of what you are involved in and outside of school. Stay tuned for a scholarship meeting later this fall.

How To Pay? Student Loans https://studentaid.alberta.ca/  in the spring . This site has both student loans and scholarships Student Lines of Credit from your bank RESP’s/Savings/Work Registered Educational Savings Plans.

How to Get More Information Open Houses – Check bulletin board outside of student services University Visits – Check bulletin board, daily bulletin, follow CHHS on Instagram https://alis.alberta.ca/occinfo/jobs-in-alberta/ Gives you job trends, where you can study in Alberta, wage info and related careers See Mr. Sandblom for careers in health sciences group (possible field trips and connect with med students) When in doubt…come down to student services 

Major Events In Province Post Secondary Fair October 4th 1:00-3:00PM Student Center at CHHS Out of Province Post Secondary Fair October 24th 6:00-8:00pm Location is TBD check https://www.albertaoop.com/events for more info on participants and location

Final Thoughts University reps are your best resource for specific questions- What is their competitive average? How many spots does a program have? What do you put for your second choice to try and transfer to your first choice program after your first year? See your guidance counsellor for help with general admission questions and application forms Competitive programs are all about marks and not first come first serve – don’t stress about getting applications in today!
