Ionic compounds #2 Criss Cross Method

Learning goals We are learning to determine chemical formulas for ionic compounds using the criss-cross method. We are learning to name binary ionic compounds.

Recall An ionic bond occurs between a metal and a non-metal. The metals lose electrons to become cations. The non-metals gain electrons to become anions. The resulting compound is held together electrostatically. The overall charge of an ionic compound is zero.

Criss cross method!!!!!

Example #1 Mg2+ O2- Ca2+ Cl1- Na1+ F1- Mg2O2 CaCl2 MgO NaF Determine the chemical formula for each compound below. a) Sodium Fluoride b) Magnesium Oxide c) Calcium Chloride Step #1: Write the ions Mg2+ O2- Ca2+ Cl1- Na1+ F1- Step #2: Criss-Cross Charges Mg2O2 CaCl2 Step #3: Write the Formula & reduce (if necessary) MgO NaF

Try these Determine the chemical formula and chemical names of each pair. Use criss-cross method … jump jump Work with your partner on the white boards!!! magnesium and chlorine aluminum and oxygen lithium and bromine

On your own Please complete p200 #2, 3, 6, 7

Transition Metals The transition metals are found in the middle 10 metallic groups of the periodic table. These metals are special because they are multivalent. They can form more than one type of ion. i.e: Copper (2+ or 1+), Nickel (2+ or 3+) and Iron (3+ or 2+) We use roman numerals to indicate the type of ion used when naming transition metal ionic compounds. iron (III) oxide  Fe2O3

Example #2 Ni3+ S2- Mn4+ N3- Cu1+ O2- a) Cu2O b) Ni2S3 c) Mn3N4 Provide the chemical name for the following ionic compounds. a) Cu2O b) Ni2S3 c) Mn3N4 Step #1: Reverse criss-cross and write the ions Ni3+ S2- Mn4+ N3- Cu1+ O2- Nickel (III) Sulphide Manganese (IV) Nitride Step #2: Using the transition metal charge, write the name Copper (I) Oxide Copper had a 1+ charge

Example #3 Ti4+ O2- Co3+ S2- Cu2+ Cl1- Ti2O4 Co2S3 CuCl2 TiO2 Provide the chemical formula for the following ionic compounds. a) Copper (II) Chloride b) Titanium (IV) Oxide c) Cobalt (III) Sulphide Ti4+ O2- Co3+ S2- Cu2+ Cl1- Ti2O4 Co2S3 CuCl2 TiO2

Try These Determine the chemical formula and chemical names of each pair. Use criss-cross method … jump jump Work with your partner on the white boards!!! titanium (III) bromide nickel (II) sulfide V2O5 AuN

On your own Please complete p200 #4, 9
