Malawi Country of 16.5 million people in southern Africa. 1 ENT surgeon and 1 Head and neck surgeon. Based in Blantyre, the country’s main business centre Big historical link with Scotland
NHS Fife Initial Visit Nurse and I visited last February Trying to assess what was required Not what we thought was required We don’t want to parachute in to do operations “Give a man a fish and he feeds for a day, teach him to fish and he feeds for the rest of his life”
Needs Simple Bottom up Shelves – trays – organise theatre – more efficient lists Not fancy kit (microscope graveyard...) Maintenance: screwdrivers, bulbs Training: Nurses Clinical Officers Surgeons

Where do we go from here? Nursing staff Identified 2 nurses Planning visit for 3 months University of St Andrews visiting scholars Can do things! Created a curriculum and will certificate in ENT Nursing Planning for next visit: ward nurses
