The Metric System A simple way to measure
What is it??? A system of measurement based on multiples of 10 1 0.001 0.01 0.1
Each Multiple has its own name Milli = 0.001 or 1/1000 Centi = 0.01 or 1/100 Deci = 0.1 or 1/10 = 1 (no prefix) Deca = 10
Each Multiple has its own name Hecto = 100 Kilo = 1000
Length – “the Meter” How long is something? We use the Meter to measure the length of objects A meter is almost equal to a yard in the English System * 1 yard= .9144 meter, 1 m = 3.28 feet, 1 yard = 3 feet
The Meter Comes in Different Sizes Millimeter Centimeter Meter Kilometer 1 inch = 25.4 mm 1 inch = 2.54 cm 1 m = 3.28 ft 1 mile = 1.6 km
10 Millimeters 1 Centimeter Is the same as 1mm 1mm 1mm 1mm 1mm 1mm 1mm
100 Centimeters Is the same as 1 Meter
1000 Millimeters 100 Centimeters 1 Meter Which is the same as
1000 Meters Is the same as 1 Kilometer
Need to Know!!!! 10 mm = 1 cm 100 cm = 1 m 1000 m = 1 km How many mm = 1 km ???
The “Need to Know” on the previous slide holds true for EVERY unit of measurement in the metric system! You can substitute in gram for meter, or liter for gram… all three have the same exact conversions! Keep this in mind as you continue through the presentation!
Mass – “the Gram” Mass is a measure like weight, or how heavy something is. Measurement like ounces and pounds. The gram is closest to an ounce in the English System of measurement
The gram comes in different sizes too! Milligram gram kilogram 1 oz = 28.35 grams 1 pound = 2.2 kg
Volume – “the Liter” Volume tells how much space an object takes up Used to measure liquids Measurement like cups, ounces and gallons The liter is closest to a quart in the English System of measurement (1 liter = 1.056 quarts, 1 quart = 4 cups)
The Liter comes in different sizes like the meter and gram! Milliliter Liter Kiloliter 1 gallon = 3.78 liters 5 ml = 1 teaspoon = 1 cc
