Explain to students that: They may not have studied this yet depending on the order their teacher teaches the topics. There are three option topics however they have studied Social Impact of Technology and therefore should not attempt to answer any of the questions relating to the other option topics. They need to always relate to wellbeing when answering the questions Section C is to be answered in a separate answer book

Explain that today we will be looking at the following sections of the Social Impact of Technology syllabus: Reasons for the development of technology Factors affecting access to and acceptance of technology Instruct students to look at page ____ in their books and write down what they know about this topic, what they want to know more about and any questions they have. Inform students we will look at this at the end and any questions they still have we will address.

Reasons for the development of technology • improve upon existing technology • economic benefit • consumer demand and human needs • social betterment • the global community • response to social problems The six dot points on this slide are the reasons for the development of technology. They are interchangeable and not always isolated reasons. The Community and Family Studies syllabus requires that you analyse how technology has emerged within transport, communication and consumer services based on these six reasons. Today we are going to look briefly at each of these reasons.

Improving upon existing technology Social betterment Technology is developed for a variety of reasons but a lot of times people use existing technology and improve it in some way. An example of this is the car. In 1807, François Isaac de Rivaz designed the first car powered by an internal combustion engine fuelled by hydrogen. In 1886 the first petrol powered automobile was invented by Karl Benz. Since then cars have been improved and been fitted with items such as radios, Bluetooth, GPS, electric windows and electric doors. In 1997 the first hybrid car was made available to the public. It was called the Toyota Prius and was released in Japan. The hybrid car helps maintain healthier air due to releasing fewer emissions. Students are to turn to page ____ in their books and complete activity 2: Brainstorm how transport technology has improved and evolved over the years. An example is the phone. The phone has come a long way since Alexander Grahame Bells invention in 1876 and that is all due to consumer demand and advancements in technology. It was in 1973 that the first mobile phone call was made. This advancement paved the way for future developments of the mobile phone. Since 1973, hundreds of mobiles have been developed, each improving existing technology whilst addressing consumer demands. The mobile has changed screen size, weight, key size, battery life and operations over the years and has branched off to address human needs such as larger buttons for the aged and visually impaired. The phone has changed a lot in the last 140 years and will continue to change due to consumer demands and human needs. On the screen are a few demands consumers have had over the years that have been met by phone manufacturers. In your books on page ______ brainstorm what features you would like in a future mobile. Give students a few minutes and ask if anyone would like to share with the group.

Economic benefit and the global community People can communicate with individuals around the world and gain access to a range of consumer services. For example: Online shopping Live chat with help services 24/7 available support Families, communities and individuals expect to be able to communicate and interact with people around the world easily. They also want to be able to do this in a way that saves them time and money. This has led to a number of technological developments, including online shopping, online help services, live chat, web conferences, webinars, and more. No longer do we have to travel to other countries to purchase items, we can now order them online. If we have a problem or question about our order, many services have an online help service. In 2015 it was estimated customers spent $19.2 billion on online retail. Online councelling support has also emerged, for example Headspace has an online support service. Individuals can now access online counselling from the comfort of their own home. With mobile phones being able to access the internet people can gain online support 24/7. We are no longer forced to make appointments and go to a physical service provider and individuals; especially youth can feel more comfortable about speaking to councilors anonymously. Those that are physically disabled or unable to leave their home can also easily access such services with little inconvenience. Online counselling has also shown to be effective in encouraging children and teenagers to receive therapy as they seem to be more comfortable with using the internet. Instruct students to go to page _______ and complete activity 4. They are required to examine how economic benefit and the global community have impacted the emergence of online counselling. Give students about 5 minutes to complete this activity and discuss responses as a group.

Response to social problems Society has a number of social problems and one example of such a problem is the use of mobile phones whilst driving. From 2010 to 2014 in NSW there were 236 crashes as a result of drivers using hand held phones while driving. Of those 7 were fatalities and 116 were injury crashes. Texting, surfing the internet or talking on the phone while driving is now one of the top 5 causes of fatalities on NSW roads, according to Drive.com. This is an alarming statistic. In 2012 Australia passed legislation that made it illegal to hold a mobile phone whilst driving. This has helped however not stopped the deaths on our roads. In 2014 Samsung developed an app called S-Drive in a direct response to this social problem. Their app rewards drivers for not using their phone whilst driving. Factors Affecting Access to and Acceptance of Technology The following are the factors affecting access to and acceptance of technology as listed in the CAFS syllabus. They include: Age Religion Education Disability Economic status Geographical location Gender Culture Inform students we will be looking at briefly age, education and disability today. Instruct students to go to page ____ and complete activity 6. Identify how three factors affect the access to and acceptance of technology. Provide an example to support your answer

Age and Education Age impacts a person’s access to and acceptance of technology. Due to generational differences the aged have not grown up with a lot of today’s technology and may fear or not understand its presence. Some aged may be reluctant to change devices that have served them well over the years. Whilst others may accept new technology however not have the education/ training to know how to use it. Whilst watching this clip complete activity 7 on page ______. This activity asks you to make notes on the feelings the older man felt about not understanding how to use the mobile phone as well as how his previous education impacted how he tried to use the mobile. For people with disabilities, technology makes things possible. Dr. Katherine Seelman Read the quote that is on the slide: “For people without disabilities, technology makes things easier. For people with disabilities, technology makes things possible.” Keeping this quote in mind students are to complete Activity 8 on page ______ and write if they agree or disagree with this statement and why or why not. Give students a few minutes and then ask them to share their thoughts with the person next to them. Ask if anyone would like to share with the group their views. Some suggested answers include: Cochlea implant Assistive technologies such as in the picture finger reader which is a wearable tool that helps visually impaired read printed text in a book or electronic device

Scenarios Scenario 1 Scenario 2 Scenario 3 Jason is 14 years old and has recently bought a pre-paid mobile phone to stay in contact with his friends. All of the other boys in his group have one. Scenario 2 Eve and Bill are an elderly couple who have retired in a rural area. They both require modifications to their home to function effectively, but are not sure if they can justify the cost. Scenario 3 Molly and Sam are young adults who are planning to start a family. Molly suffers from endometriosis and is considering IVF. Sam’s religion is against any form of reproductive technology. Look at Activity 9- These three scenarios are in your book. Read scenarios out to students Using correct terminology identify the factor/s that have influenced the persons access to and acceptance of technology in each of these scenarios. Ask students to share answers with the group. Ask students to come up with their own scenarios. One which shows how a factor influences and individual’s access to technology and another scenario which shows how a factor influences an individual’s acceptance of technology. Ask students to read their scenarios to the person sitting next to them and see if they can identify the influencing factor/s.
