Well-known oncogenic fusions include BCR-ABL in chronic myelogenous leukemia, EML4-ALK in lung cancer, and TMPRSS2-ERG in prostate cancer. (B) Lau et al. (2014) discovered that approximately 23% of HBV-positive hepatocellular carcinomas harbor an integration of the hepatitis B X protein gene (HBx) into a LINE1 element in chromosome 8. This integration leads to expression of the HBx-LINE1 fusion transcript, which mediates its oncogenic effects independent of the protein it encodes.
