Look at the pictures given below. In both the pictures, the whole is divided into two parts. But in picture B, the whole is divided into two equal parts.

Here, the group is divided into two equal parts.

HALF When a whole or a collection is divided into two equal parts, each part is called one half of the whole. . We represent this as 1/2.

A B Here, both the pictures are divided into three parts. But in picture A, it is divided into three equal parts.

Here the group is divided into three equal parts.

ONE THIRD When a whole or a collection is divided into three equal parts ,each parts is called one-third of the whole. We represent this as 1/3.

Here, in both pictures, the whole is divided into four parts. In picture A all the four parts are equal.

Here, a group is divided into four equal parts.

ONE-FOURTH We represent this as 1/4 When a whole or a collection is divided into four equal parts,each part is called one-fourth. We represent this as 1/4

NUMERATOR In a fraction, the top number tells us how many equal parts have been taken for consideration.We call it the Numerator.

DENOMINATOR In a fraction, the bottom number tells us into how many equal parts a whole [a collection]has been divided.We call it the Denominator.

Here 2/4,3/4,1/2,5/6,2/5,3/7 are called Proper fractions. 2/4, 3/4, 1/2, 4/4, 3/3, 5/6, 2/5, 3/7. Here 2/4,3/4,1/2,5/6,2/5,3/7 are called Proper fractions. In a fraction, if the numerator is smaller than the denominator;the fraction is called Proper fraction.

Here, 5/4,4/4,6/4,5/5,5/3 are called Improper- Fractions . 1/2, 5/4, 4/4, 3/5, 6/4, 5/5, 4/8, 5/3 Here, 5/4,4/4,6/4,5/5,5/3 are called Improper- Fractions In a fraction,if the numerator is greater or equal to the denominator;the fraction is called Improper fraction.
