Our World in the 1970s and 1980s The US stops fighting in the Vietnam War in 1973. The war ends 2 years later. The first Earth Day was held in 1970. Title 9 was passed in 1972 to create more equal opportunities for men & women in the US. The Watergate Scandal leads to Nixon’s resignation as the US president. The Cold War continued into the 1980s with tension in the Middle East and with the Soviet Union. In 1987, Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev sign a new arms control agreement. The Berlin Wall is finally destroyed in 1989.
