WWI PRIMARY SOURCE PROPAGANDA ASSIGNMENT # 8

WWI PROPAGANDA Information (poster, commercial, flyer, etc..) which is biased or misleading in order to convince people to join or support a belief/cause. WWI saw the use of propaganda by all nations involved in the conflict. Complete the following assignment on the next few slides.

Propaganda Site Use the website below to access a variety of WWI propaganda posters from various nations. http://www.ww1propaganda.com/ Use the table of contents bar on the left hand side of the page to view posters from the following nations: U.S., Great Britain, France, and Germany

Describe 3 posters of your choice in the chart below: U.S. Great Britain France Germany 1. 2. 3.

Choose one poster from each nation (so that’s 3 total) and… 1. What kind of emotional reaction would you experience if you were looking at these during the war? Explain. U.S.- G.B.- France- Germany- 2. Which one did you find most offensive by today’s standards? Explain why. 3. Should governments behave in such a manipulative way? (even in war time?) Explain.

Complete your own WWI propaganda poster Create your own WWI poster either hand drawn or on the computer (must be able to print.) You must include one or more of the “tools” listed to the right and choose one of the things you are trying to get people to do (listed to the right). Make sure you write what you are trying to get people to do at the bottom of your poster. “Propaganda Tools” Demonization- make your enemy look evil. Catchy slogans Emotional/Patriotic Visual Symbols (should be strong to get your point across) Half Truths/Lies Humor/Caricatures- make the enemy look ridiculous. *You are trying to get people to: 1. Recruit Solders 2. Unify the country 3. Finance the war (bonds) 4. Conserve resources (ration) 5. Get people to participate in the war effort
