Lesson Eight Golgatha

Pilate closed his hearing around the sixth hour, and Jesus was condemned to die.

Luke 23:26 And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.

Luke 23:26 And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus. Some scholars associate this man with “Simeon that was called Niger,” one of the apostles and teachers of the early church named in Acts 13:1.

Cyrene was a city in northern Africa.

Luke 23:27-28 27 And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. 28 But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.

29 For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck. 30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. 31 For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?

29 For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck. 30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. 31 For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry? If such things could happen to God’s sinless Son, what could happen the nation that rejected him?

John 19:17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

John 19:17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: Only in Luke is Golgotha translated Calvary, from the Latin Calvariæ Locus (the place of a skull).

A calvarium (plural, calvaria) is an incomplete skull; especially :  the portion of a skull including the braincase and excluding the lower jaw and facial portion.

Matthew 27:34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.

Matthew 27:34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink. Mark 15:23 And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.

Matthew 27:34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink. Mark 15:23 And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not. These were not two different drinks. The vinegar was a light wine. The gall or myrrh would deaden the pain.

Mark 15:25 And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.

All 4 Gospels state that there were two others crucified with Jesus. Some claim there were FOUR crucified with Jesus, primarily because Luke describes the men as “malefactors” but Matthew and Mark refer to them as “thieves.” All 4 Gospels state that there were two others crucified with Jesus.

All 4 Gospels state that there were two others crucified with Jesus. Not only is this a weak argument – if one man describes a house as blue and another as aqua, does that mean there are two houses? – it defies reason that not one of the gospel writers would speak of four men crucified with Jesus. All 4 Gospels state that there were two others crucified with Jesus.

Mark 15:26 And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS. Luke 23:38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

John 19:19-22 19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. 20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. 21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. 22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

When the cross of Jesus is displayed, the abbreviation INRI is often placed on the sign above his head.

When the cross of Jesus is displayed, the abbreviation INRI is often placed on the sign above his head. In Latin, “JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS” is

John 19:20 said, “The place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city.”

John 19:23-24 23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. 24 They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

(From Psalm 22)

Psalm 22:14-18 14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. 16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. 17 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. 18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.

Both Matthew and Mark speak of the taunts Jesus heard as he hung on the cross.

Mark 15:29-32 29 And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, 30 Save thyself, and come down from the cross. 31 Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save. 32 Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.

Only Luke testifies of the one who found repentance.

Luke 23:39-43 39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. 40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. 42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. 43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

Having initially joined the other revilers, this man was moved to repentance as he hung on his own cross.

Having initially joined the other revilers, this man was moved to repentance as he hung on his own cross. Perhaps it was Christ’s prayer that changed his heart – something else recorded only in Luke:

But how could Jesus say “Today shalt thou be with me in paradise” when he knew he would lie dead in the tomb for three days and nights?

But how could Jesus say “Today shalt thou be with me in paradise” when he knew he would lie dead in the tomb for three days and nights? For that malefactor – and for all who die in Christ – his first cognizant moment after death will be his first breath of everlasting life.

For that malefactor – and for all who die in Christ – his first cognizant moment after death will be his first breath of everlasting life. As far as he was concerned, he would be in paradise before the sun went down that day.
