Steps to beginning a project… 1. If you are in Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st or 2nd grade, you need to find a fictional book that you really, really like to read. 2. Choose a book that has several colorful pictures (this makes it easier). 3. Try to find an easy-read. Chapter books may be too much to take on for this project. 4. You may use a book from home, the school library or public library. Just make sure the book is on your reading level.

Fictional Examples…

I’ve got the book, now what do I do? Fill out the sheet which covers the 8 main points to put on the board. Let your parent check it for accuracy. This will help organize your information. Title – name of book Author – who wrote it Publisher/Publication Date – company and year Plot Summary – short retelling of main parts Main Character(s) – who are important to story line Setting - time & place - when and where Conflict – the problem What is wrong? Solution – how the problem is solved or fixed How did it become right?

Let’s begin… 1. All projects at VLES fall in to the Family category. Pre-K & K – Division A 1st & 2nd grades – Division B 2. Make sure your information on the reading fair checklist and organizer is correct before you begin. 3. Decide if you want to paint the board, cover it with material or construction paper, or leave it white. 4. Choose a picture that YOU would like to put on the board and YOU draw it (You can have some help.). 5. BE NEAT and don’t overdo the stuff on the board. 6. Arrange the 8 main points on the board and don’t leave any out!! Look at the examples at school if needed.

Completing the project board Project board must be 48”wide (when flattened out), 36” tall, and 18” deep. Do not glue anything down onto the board until you have laid it out to best fit the board layout with the pictures and artwork. Use rubber cement, two-sided taped, or glue sticks for better adhesion. Liquid glue leaves ridges, so use a finger and smear the glue. Have a parent or adult close by for using the hot glue gun, staple gun, or other special tool. Do not cut up a real book to do this project! Do not go off of the board in any way. You may have a display set up in the front of the board. Do not exceed the arms of the board.

VLES Reading Fair 2018-19 details… Turn in Reading Fair projects are due to VLES classrooms Tuesday, October 16th by 8:00 a.m.. Reading Fair is OPTIONAL for all grade levels BUT… All Reading Fair projects count as both an EXTRA daily and test Language Arts grade (2 grades total) and will be counted as part of the 2nd quarter average. Projects will be judged and winners will be announced Friday, October 19th. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will represent VLE at the district reading fair and have a chance to advance to region and state competitions.
