The Scarlet Letter Exam Essay Questions and Vocabulary

Potential Essay Questions The scarlet letter, as a symbol, appears in many forms throughout the novel. Choose three forms, and explain---in one paragraph each---what the letter represents. Cite specific evidence from the text to support your interpretations. Consider the relationship between Chillingworth and Dimmesdale. To what extent are they dependent upon one another? How does Hawthorne juxtapose these two characters with one another? Be specific in using evidence.

Vocabulary The matching portion of Vocabulary will only require the words you worked on earlier this week. I will hand those back by the end of class.

P10 Words (16-18) Colloquy, Consecration, Denizen, Dryad, harrowed, hillock, loquacity, meditative, transmuting, vestige For each of the following words: a) Define the word on a piece of paper b) Write a sentence, or draw a picture, demonstrating that you understand how to use the word.
