Analyzing Symbols We’ve talked some about symbols in each of the two texts. Today we are going to look at them deeper. Fold a piece of paper into three sections hot dog style In the left column, write down the physical object from the text that represents something larger In the center column, write down what that physical object represents In the right column, write down something in your life that symbolizes a similar meaning or representation.

Charting the Green Light While the Green Light itself is a symbol, it symbolizes different things at different points of the novel Identify the crucial quotes that discuss the Green Light in The Great Gatsby Create a timeline of the light Chart on the timeline how the light changes over the course of the novel. Label each point as the chapter in which it is discussed. Under the points put one quote from where the light is discussed. Above the points, give a one sentence explanation of what the light represents at that point in the novel. After you finish your timeline, discuss why the Green Light is perhaps one of the most important and identifiable symbols from literature.

How do we see and use symbols in everyday life? We use symbols in everyday life and language to represent larger thoughts and ideas that can be hard to convey or explain Come up with a list of 5 symbols that are meaningful and important to you personally. Briefly explain what the symbol means to you. Then, with your seat partner, come up with 5 symbols that are meaningful to the community/larger world around you. Briefly explain what the symbol means.

Symbols Notes - Importance It’s important to think about symbols and why author’s work to incorporate them into stories They provide a way for us (the reader) to connect with an idea or message that the author is working to convey Symbols often work with motifs to develop or display a theme within the text
