III. ENERGY A. Definition – The ability to do work. What is work? WORK – A force (push or pull) acted on an object which displaces (moves) the object in the direction of the force.

B. Forms of Energy * Heat – Energy transfer between particles * Radiant – electromagnetic radiation (light, radio, x-rays) * Chemical – bonds between atoms * Nuclear – fission or fusion of nucleus of an atom * Mechanical – motion and position of an object

LAW OF CONSERVATION OF MATTER & ENERGY You can’t make matter! You can’t get rid of matter! You can only CHANGE matter!!! All matter is finite in the universe. ENERGY You can’t make energy! You can’t get rid of energy! You can only CHANGE energy!!! All energy is finite in the universe Matter and energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only changed.

Energy and Chemical Change Energy is absorbed or released in the form of HEAT when chemical bonds are formed or broken. EXOTHERMIC REACTIONS: * Energy is released during the reaction. * Energy is a product of the reaction. ENDOTHERMIC REACTIONS: * Energy is absorbed during the reactions. * Energy is a reactant in the reaction.
