Communication Networks NETW 501 Tutorial 2 Prepared by: Eng. Minar El-Aasser

Need of Standard OSI (Open System Interconnect) Model 7 layer abstract reference model for network architecture Set of protocols that would allow any two different components to communicate regardless of their underlying architecture

OSI (Open System Interconnect) Model

Why Layering?

Peer-to-Peer Communication

Communication Network Example Server Routers PC

Computer/Data Network Components Layer 3 Layer 2 Layer 1 Layer 7 Layer 7

Introduction to Packet Tracer Packet Tracer is a network simulator that allows you create a simulated network, configure the devices in the network, test the network, and examine the traffic in the network. A network simulator is a software that predicts the behavior of a computer network. Packet tracer is a CISCO proprietary tool. The first step in creating a simulated network in Packet Tracer is to place the devices in the logical workplace and connect them together.

Introduction to Packet Tracer ‘cont’d’ Activity 2 – Objectives: Correctly indentify cables for use in the network Physically cable a peer-to-peer and switched network Verify basic connectivity on each network N.B: You Can Find “Packet Tracer” Source on the intranet in the Information & Engineering Technology Folder Cisco Packet Tracer
